Yes, true.

50 amp service is two legs of 50 amp 120 v. service.
So think of it like this:
Leg 1, 50 amp x 120 v. = 6,000 watts.
Leg 2, 50 amp x 120 v. = 6,000 watts.
Total available watts = 12,000 watts.

In your example to equate 30 + 20 = 50:
30 amps x 120 v = 3,600 watts.
20 amps x 120 v. = 2,400 watts.
Total available watts = 6,000 watts, exactly half of the 50 amp service.

30 amp only service:
30 amps x 120 v. = 3,600 watts.

The difference between 50 amp and 30 amp 12,000 - 3,600 = 8,400 watts!

Same situation as if the loads on the one phase are not in use - i.e. second AC.

Hi

You have breakers that trip at a total of 100A. If you wire them to 110V, there is nothing stopping you from pulling the full 100A. So indeed it can be a problem.

With "everything" running on a big trailer, you can go over 50A total drain. If it's cold out, you can hit that without trying very hard ( two A/C's running plus the electric furnace plus ...). The wire / connectors are "happy" running at 80% of the rated load ( = 40A). As you go over this, you are getting into the "wear out faster" zone.

Why does this matter?

If the post you are plugged into is not wired correctly, you are set up for a problem on the neutral. Miss-wired the connector will wear out quicker. That just makes things worse.

If you ever have a connector melt down on you in a campground ... check the voltage !!!! If it's a 50A circuit wired with 110V, you have a *very* good reason to get them to replace things at their expense !!!

Yes and no.
Remember, there are two 50 amp legs, each with a 50 amp breaker.
So, in theory, you could pull 100 amps as long as the load was balanced perfectly between the two legs. But it won't be.

Another telltale sign of a 30A unit is the presence of a generator hookup on the front of the trailer. Units with 50A do not have it.
