50 amp service is
two legs of 50 amp 120 v. service.
So think of it like this:
Leg 1, 50 amp x 120 v. = 6,000 watts.
Leg 2, 50 amp x 120 v. = 6,000 watts.
Total available watts = 12,000 watts.
In your example to equate 30 + 20 = 50:
30 amps x 120 v = 3,600 watts.
20 amps x 120 v. = 2,400 watts.
Total available watts = 6,000 watts, exactly half of the 50 amp service.
30 amp only service:
30 amps x 120 v. = 3,600 watts.
The difference between 50 amp and 30 amp 12,000 - 3,600 =
8,400 watts!
