50 amp Service

I recently purchased a 2019 Classic 30’. I hope that you can follow my thoughts on this question. I am plugged into 50 amp service in our RV park in Montana. If I am using my small space heater I cannot use any other portable appliance (electric kettle, hair dryer etc) as it trips the breaker. Can use one portable electric item only. The breaker that trips is a 15amp breaker. But I can use my space heater and the microwave. Assume microwave is plugged into an outlet behind microwave. I previously had a Motorhome with 50amp service and never had a problem using multiple portable appliance. Do you know if all the outlets are tied to the 15amp breaker? Am I missing something here? With 50 amp service thought I would have little problems with needed power. Thank you in advance for any of your thoughts.

OK. Try using your heater on other outlets.
You are sharing power across the busbar on different circuit legs with a number of other power hungry items in your rig.
Microwave (12.5 amps) , Refrigerator (4.0 amps), Air Conditioner (12.5 amps) etc. The reason Airstream goes to 50 amp is for 2 ACs. Therefore a 30 amp service rig wouldn't allow you to run 2 ACs.
Try different outlets.

All of the outlet circuits are 15A but you have several. the Microwave is on its own circuit. Referring to your owners manual page 8-18 you have three separate outlet circuits so you can run up to three large electrical devices at once. Your 50A service is actually two 50A and the loads are distributed so you can run both ACs, the water heater and three devices (or two devices plus the microwave) at once.

Since the breaker tripping is inside the Airstream, the problem is not park power.
I don't know what your "small space heater" draws, but I'd be surprised if it was over 1800 w. (or 15 amps) so the breaker SHOULD not trip IF it's the only thing on that breaker.
Try elsewhere for openers.

You have multiple circuits on a 50A service. Each Air Conditioner has its own, Microwave has its own, outlets have their own (daisy chained), hot water heater has its own - each are on their own circuit.

With 50A 240v service (which is really 100A 120v available spilt across two branches of your panel) you can run many loads on different circuits (like microwave at the same time as the air conditioner because they are on different circuits).

You cannot, however, run many loads on the same circuit - which is what you are trying to do. Same thing in your house at home, no different. Your brick and mortar house has 200A our 400A service or what have you, but if you try and run that space heater and say an electric kettle using the outlets in your kitchen you will trip the 15A breaker for your kitchen outlets because its too much load for that circuit.

If you use your space heater often, you may consider having an electrician add a dedicated 15A circuit just for that device. then you can plug other things into outlets while your space heater is running.

1. The breaker may be faulty.
2. The small electric heater may be pulling more amps than designed.
3. There may be something else on that breaker pulling more than 6 or 7 amps.

1a Swap out the breaker.
2b Plug the heater in a few other outlets one at a time it should not trip the breaker unless there is something else on the same breaker.
3c. Try another heater.

4d You need to find out what else is on that same circuit breaker to determine load.

Space heater = 9-13 AC amps
Electric kettle or hair dryer = 8-12 AC amps

Total current is likely 17 - 25 amps on a 15 amp circuit.

I doubt there is an issue with the breaker or your space heater or your kettle / hair dryer. Simply too many amps on the circuit. Breaker is likely working as designed = protect the wires from heat and fire.

See the owner’s manual for 120V breakers

Hi Polson,

You might want to take a peek at the Owner’s Manual - electrical section for a breakdown of what is connected to each circuit. This might help you find one lightly loaded to connect the heater to. Also, can you try the heater at a lower setting? Perhaps there’s a happy medium for draw vs. capacity.

Good luck!
Jeff
