30 amp fuses keep blowing

What timing. We are in Ouray Colorado, with our 8 month old and now have electrical problems. Our 2012 28' keeps blowing the 2 30 amp fuses.



To narrow it down, I have:

- unplugged from shore power

- turned off all breakers

- unplugged all receptical and microwave from outlets

- put trailer in store mode

- replaced with 2 new 30 amp blade fuses

- put trailer back in use mode

- both 30 amp fuses immediately blow!



Not much more in process of elimination. reaching out to forums before I haul our trailer to a nearby town for repair. I think there is a bigger problem, as even when on shore power, the whole trailer electrical turns off. I then have to turn off the breakers and back on to get the electric to stay on for a few minutes.

Have you checked the polarity/grounding and voltage output from the post?

Check the electrical cable connecting the trailer to the tow vehicle for damage.

Try disconnecting the trailer from the tow vehicle and see if the problem goes away.

Not to scare you, but be careful turning the power on for a few minutes knowing that they will eventually blow. You may have a "hot" skin condition, which is usually when a HOT (positive) 12V wire is touching a ground connection somewhere (or vise versa, and a 12v Ground wire is touching a positive wire). If that's the case, you could feel a tingle getting in and out of the trailer when your feet are on the ground and your hand touches the door handle. Because you've got the little one with you, just wanted to mention this; I'd keep the power off until you figure out what's going on; those fuses are blowing for a reason (to protect you).

are these two 30 amp fuses in the converter?

The fuses on the converter blow when you have a reverse polarity situation. Usually caused by the battery(s) being connected incorrectly.
Has any work been done on the coach?

30 amp fuses blowing

I had same problem last spring. Turned out one of my batteries had a shorted plate in the battery. Since batteries were at the end of their lifecycle, I replaced both, and haven't had problem since.

I have the same problem on shore power IF I am running the air conditioner / heat pump and have the hot water heater on electric rather than propane. The air conditioner needs 20 plus of your 30 amps and your electric hot water heater needs 10 plus of your 30, throw in any other electrical stuff and you are blowing fuses. Mine is a 2014 International Stirling.

I think you mean the circuit breaker is popping.

To further this path even though we don't have confirmation from the OP that these are the fuses in question...

I had a similar issue with my converter in previous Airstream that I owned. The Iota converter would blow one or both of the blade fuses occasionally. I dealt with it. Then, it stopped blowing them, but would instead go to top-off charge and once topped off, would never kick back on. I had to remove one of the battery cables, put it back on, and then it would charge again. I discussed all of above with a very knowledgeable guy at Iota and he explained that there was an internal issue with the converter. They could repair it but would be just as costly as a new one. So that's what I did...replaced the converter and no more issues.
