1961 - 12 volt or 6 volt?

Need a little help, o' wise sages of great Karma.

Working on my '61 Safari and was wondering if it was 6 volt or 12?

Also, my outside battery box is in bad shape, could I put a sealed (Optima) battery under the dinette seat until I get the box fixed? No real danger is there from a sealed battery?

Your electrical system is 12 volt unlike early automobiles that had 6 volt. A battery inside the coach is fine if it is sealed. The original battery box will not hold an Optima battery. It houses a farm implement battery. Seach the forums for the kind and part number. BTW, a battery only gives off fumes when being charged.

Thanks! I intend to make a new box for the front to fit Optima but until then I may extend wires back into trailer.

What battery do you recommend? Are the sealed ones worth the $$? If I manufacturer a replacement battery box for the front exteror that duplicates the original(except for size) would there be many takers?

I'm not so sure I would want the extra weight being supported by the wall but you may get some takers. Are you a metal worker? You didn't post your location in your profile. I need a new compartment door cover. If you offer, I will take you up on that

Not a metal worker, just a big enough redneck to think I can do anything once.

The weight should not be too much of an issue since the battery would be winder but not as long.
