12V power loss

Hi, I am the new owner of a 1978 airstream trialer. I have a 12V electrical question. I have noticed that when I turn on more than 3 or 4 lights, they start to dim. If I attempt to run the radio, it will not even power the speakers until I start turning lights off. Any ideas what this may be? The trailer has the original univolt converter And the lights are always dim. This occurs when I am plugged into 110VAC or 12VDC.

Thanks,

Slade Weaver

First look for the obvious

This is a classic low voltage situation. This can be caused by a number of things. The first thing I would do is to disconnect the battery, unplug the A/S from 120V and then proceed to loosen the connections at the Univolt, wiggle them and then retighten. Do the same with the battery connections. Then do same at the 12V terminal block. If the dim lights still persist, I would have the battery checked as a shorted cell in the battery can pull the whole system down. Given that you indicated that the dim lights occur whether on 120 power or 12V power would seem to vindicate the Univolt. I really suspect a corroded connection somewhere.

univolt

check the condition of the fuse holders in the univolt.

they become unsprung and overheat. wd 40 and rotating the glass fuses is a temporary fix.

good luck
