Wounded '61 Bambi Rescued in Texas!

We did it. My wife and I took possesion of a '61 Bambi in very poor condition. Towed it from Fort Worth to Austin without a problem. We can't even get into the unit because all of the original interior is dismantaled and shoved inside. Can't wait to get it cleaned out so I can see if I really have to do a shell off floor or not! Missing skylight and windows for years doesn't give me much confidence... y'all will be hearing my pleas for help soon! I know y'all will be asking for pictures, so I will try to get the gory shots posted soon.

Looking forward to making friends on this forum!

Just wanted to say...

Howdy Robb and Teal, Ask all the questions you want! We are here for you ever step of the way. Hope you're wrong about the shell off but chances are if skylight and vents/glass have openings that isn't a good sign. The above posts suggest to get with the search function ... it is located on the blue tool bar on the top of each page. Use key words to describe what it is you want to learn about, click the search tab and you will be amazed at the information that awaits you. Remember the only dumb question is the one not asked. WELCOME to the forums and Happy Trails, Ed

Bambi Rescued

Welcome Robb and Teal,
Looking forward to seeing pictures of your "new" Bambi. Being one of the smallest trailers built by A/S, the Bambi is an "attention getter" wherever you go. You have lots of friends here, that you just haven't met yet. Good luck with your Bambi.

Greetings Fellow Austinite

I live on FM1826, near the Salt Lick. If I can help in any way, let me know. I have woodworking shop tools.

You might want to contact member emo59, who lives in Bastrop. They have 4 (count 'em) vintage trailers. One usable and 3 to be restored.

We have one beautifully restored 61 Bambi in our WBCCI unit (Texas Highland Lakes Unit) who lives in Bryan. They went through a restoration and polishing. I can get you in touch if you would like.

robb & teal,

welcome to the forums! sounds like a great purchase.

judging by the condition you described (missing skylight, windows) you'll most certainly have to replace the entire sublfoor and inspect and possibly repair the frame. the trailer is 46 years old. whether you decide to do shell on vs shell off will be up to you. most people who go through an extensive renovation prefer to take the shell off. it is possible to do a shell on as some members have done, but it really depends on the particular airstream and what needs to be done. check out member norcal bambi and his shell off, member uwe's "63 for me" for a great reference, and i've just took off the shell on my flying cloud so there's some good pix there as well.

looking forward to seeing pix and your progress.

Rob & Teal, welcome aboard. Great find. We have a 63 Bambi CA model. There is another person in the West who has Ohio model. Let's all know if we can be of any help in your adventure.

As Pahaska noted, we already have one beautifully restored Bambi in our Texas Highland Lakes Unit of the WBCCI. We are the unit that has hosted three Vintage Rallies in the past three years. We're extremely vintage friendly. We have a number of folks interested in vintage trailers with several of them possessing extraordinary knowledge in helping you with the various problems you will encounter during restoration. Many of those members live in the Austin/Wimberley area. I'd like to extend you a personal invitation to come try us out. You will thoroughly enjoy these folks. They are a truly fun group of people. Our next rally will be in Schulenburg Mar 1-4. If at all interested send me a PM and I'll get you in touch with the man who can make it happen.

Thumbs up Pictures are up...

I just posted the Pics of her condition when we picked her up.

http://www.airforums.com/photos/showimage.php?i=14721&catid=member&imageuser=19390

You can see that all of the interior (along items that aren't A/S related) is piled up on the inside. We have gotten her home and have emptied her out. I will take and post those pictures when I can.

A tour of the brewery at Shiner is on the rally agenda. I have toured there before, but I'll willingly go back for more beer!

At least you have some templates for some of the cupboards if you decide to do it in a similar fashion. A walk through a new 16 foot Bambi might give you some great ideas. The important thing is to have the body and that you have. After that you can do anything you need to it to make it your own style. I look forward to seeing the pictures as you progress. Bambi's are great trailers.
