Tires and Rim sizes for 69 Globetrotter?

Hello everyone, I'm old but new again. I have been gone for probably over 13 years. I now have a 1969 Globetrotter 21' and want to put new rims and Wide White wall tires on her. Can anyone give me a bit of guidance on the size rims and tires initially came on the 1969 21' Globetrotter two wheels RV. Would very much appreciate any advice on size (Dimensions) of Rims and size of Tires I would be looking for. Thanks, and glad to be back.

Hello from Colorado and welcome back to these Airstream Forums. Gee, I've been cursing a 69 Globetrotter since October. I'm renovating the old girl. 69 is the first year of the new body style. I find the trailer pretty well built in my view.
You might like to take a peak at my project thread in the Airstream Trailer Forums toward the bottom of the forums page.

The Globetrotter came with 7" by 15" steel rims. 6 bolt on 5" bolt circle if memory serves, or truck type steel wheels. 205x75R 15 is the trailer tire size. Some folks run 215x75R-15 but expect more difficulty getting them up into the wheelhouse. Special Trailer is the right type of tire at load rating "D" and 50 psi pressure. Passenger car tires are not recommended. Light Truck tires can be used as many folks do. I find the ST tires adequate for me.

A tire failure can be catastrophic with an Airstream trailer. The flopping rubber does a lot of damage to the wheelhouse, body metal and even interior parts. Air pressure, tire inspection, and new tires about every 5 years help prevent tire failures.

Here is the Airstream trailer standard specifications for model year 1969.
Others will chime in and tell us about their experiences with the wheels and tires.

A Word of Caution:

Be very careful to get the right kind of tire and wheel.

For example, in the specification dbj216 posted above says: " ..... 7" X 15" truck type extra strength wheels with nylon tubeless tires (6 ply on 18 foot Caravel and 21 foot Globetrotter .......) "

What is written is misleading.

What they should have said was: The tires were 7.00-15LT Load Range C mounted on 5.5" wheels.

At the time, a 7.00-15LT Load Range C tire had a load carrying capacity of 1520# at 45 psi. This would have been a bias ply tire.

Nowadays, a 7.00*15LT LR C has a load carrying capacity of 1710# at 50 psi (the * in the size meaning what would appear there could a "D" for diagonal (bias ply), a "B" for bias belted, or an "R" for radial.) These tires are currently available, sometimes in a Load Range D.

However, current practice for trailers is to use an ST tire and an ST205/75R15 LR C has a load carrying capacity of 1820# at 50 psi (single) on a 5.50" rim, but the tire is 3 1/2" smaller in diameter than a 7.00-15LT!

HOWEVER, none of these are available in a whitewall ! If I have this right, any 7.00-15 available in a whitewall is a PASSENGER CAR tire. You do NOT want to use those!

I run only 7.00x15 Bias Ply's on ever trailer currently owned from a 1956 to a 1996. Would highly suggest you check out this company, "Made in USA" Bias-Ply tires. As a side note, when you lose a bias-ply tire, it "does not" normally become a chainsaw spinning at 60mph cutting up the side of your Airstream causing $$$$ in damage.

Specs for the tires you need:

7.00-15LT A D/8 LA225 HWY 15/32 29.60 5.5X15 7.90 1800 60 2040 60 32

Thanks for the clarifications CapriRacer: That is what makes Airstream Forums such a great website. I didn't know the width of the wheel.
