The PO was going to turn it into a shed!

Hi Airstreamers,

As a newbee to this group I thought I would post a quick introduction. We, picked up our first AS project two weeks back. We have been looking for the right ship for some time and one reared it's head. Our goal was to find one that we could do a few mods and enjoy. Well, some how we found it...or it found us. After talking with the owner we found out that he was ready to turn the beauty into a tool shed. It was at that time my wife and I looked at each other and said..."no way, how could anyone do something like that to an icon." I look forward to chatting with some of you in the very near future as I will be need your expertise in getting our beauty back in working order. Thanks to all that make this site a very valuable tool!!!

Welcome to the Forum. Post some pictures of your new toy, please. I can't quite figure out the new format here, so post pictures to this thread so I can see what you found.

Your homework, right now: Study up, here on the forums, on the Torsion Axles system. Some learning, but not that terrible. There will be a test on the shape of your axles. Next, study up on brakes, again here on the forums. Do you have disc (better) or do you have drums. If disc, how are you going to push the hydraulic lines. Again, tough learning, but not that bad. There will be a test on what brakes you have, and how you gonna activate them.
If you decide to accept this mission, there will be only a few hundred folks here ready to help ya with the answers.
This message will self destruct in

The qualification of 'first' is an interesting choice as if the will be more.

Restoring the older units is not done overnight.
Plan on 6 to 9 months, not including polishing time.

For you who like pics, as I do, I loaded some pics after I posted my intro. This being our first AS we are learning and doing. We have worked on PUPs in the past and have had good success so we thought "why not let's tackle something that BIG. Now that we have gutted her we will repair some roof leaks, relocate plumbing, fix floor rot, new seal around windows, tackle the axles and start the interior upfit. We are going to be putting in some bunks, upgrade the galley, open up the living area and re-design the bathroom. We don't expect to get to the rear bathroom until early next year, however we should have most of the other areas camp worthy (local trips) by late August. Working on the axles is my next objective in addition to adding a Hensley Hitch to our team.

Congratulations on your new 'Stream. We just bought our first one a week ago. I can't believe someone would think of turning an AS into a tool shed. Good luck on the restoration!
