Someday came…..

All of us, at one point or another, whether planning for an event, a trip or planning a purchase, have said it…..”Maybe someday.”

Today, someday came. It was the culmination of a life long dream, one that stretched all the way back to my childhood. After a lifetime of camping, so many a mile of road spent looking for, and pointing out Airstreams; a game between my grandfather and I as we passed them during our travels. “Look, there’s another one!” my grandpa would say, “It looks like something from outer space!” I would bounce from one side of the car to the other, pressing my face against the window, trying to get as close as I could to each shining roadway rocket. We would comb every campground we stayed in looking for the silver “somedays” and trying to guess the roads they traveled. “Yeah, maybe someday” my grandfather would smile and say. “Yeah, maybe someday” I would echo. But for all the memories we made; sharing a lifetime of love for the great outdoors, the endless hikes and hours around the campfire, alas, for him, someday was never to be.

Today my silver someday became a reality. After more than two years of dedicated research, of learning and of saving, two years’ worth of going to RV shows, visiting our local dealer, sitting in units for hours at a time, educating ourselves; building friendships. Today my wife and I picked up our new Airstream. A 2018 International Signature 27FBT. It is now the new home of my grandfathers old hiking stick and so we begin our next chapter!

I look forward to continuing to learn more about the Airstream lifestyle and chatting with all you on the boards. If, in your travels, you come across someone who seems just a bit too excited about their AS, please stop and say “hi”, it just might be me!

A thought. As a parent and grandparent, you never know what influences the course of you life and your descendants. I think DW and I are lucky in that our kids and grands seem to be doing well, enjoying the out doors, and growing up to be good persons. Your Grandfather was apparently a good influence on you, with his interest in travel and the outdoors, and some of my best memories were made by my grandparents, who also loved to travel. Keep traveling and appreciating what you learned, and pass new adventures on to the next generation!

Someday came…..

Awesome story J. For me, it was my grandparents Avions......alas, I like a 1/2 ton truck, and Avion’s are heavy, so we went Airstream. I got close though, and remember many of the same things as you about them and their rigs. Now, we bring our 8&5 year old grans with us quite a bit and cherish every trip. Enjoy your new coach!!

Thanks all, I appreciate the thoughts and feedback.

rmkrum/shinypete, I agree with your sentiments. We have three boys who are now 25, 23 and 21 and like my grandparents did with me, we have taken them camping all their lives; still do even though they're all out of the house. In our family, it's our heritage.

Thanks Bob! Our other passion is Weimaraner's. That avatar is our Ellie Girl. She's been gone for two years now.

We have had a couple of them over the years (our new boy is just 10 weeks old ) and when we lived in Atlanta we worked with the Weimaraner rescue. We had the pleasure of fostering and training many over the years. They are incredible animals.

My wife and I loved your post brother! Our “someday” isn’t here yet, but it will be here next June, Lord willing.

Look forward to hearing of your experiences!
