I joined the forum many years ago hoping to become an Airstream owner, but life changed and that didn't happen. Flash forward to a few weeks ago when hubby said "I think it's time we looked for an Airstream". I almost cried!
So... we are on the hunt for a 27-31ft, possibly mid-to-late-70s Airstream with a rear bed within a reasonable distance from Dallas, TX. The skin and frame must be good (aka decent enough for an older trailer). We are planning on replacing/redoing most everything inside.
Oh, and even though this is my (the wife) account, DH may be using it. If a way technical, detailed question is asked, it's probably him!
Thanks!

Welcome back!
Welcome back to Airstream Forums, janiemerle!
We're renovating a 1974 29 ft Airstream Ambassador that we bought in early 2007. Some of the best advice we were given was to go ahead and camp while we are renovating (and we are). If we wait till we're completely finished with the renovation before we camp, we'd miss out on lots of great experiences and adventures. That advice has proven to be very true.
Enjoy your adventure!

High Time
Janie good luck, yall should be able to easily find something in those size and era ranges.
'74,'75,'76,'77 Overlander, Ambassador, Sovereign, Excella500, or perhaps an Argosy Model.
Even a '78,'79,'or '80 would be considered the '70s era.
As would a '69,'70.'71,'72, and '73 but those did not have grey water tanks and I would go that way only if everything else was exceptional or the price was considerably less than the '74 and up, relatively same conditions.
Have you gone back and reviewed your older posts? Have your wants (size & floorplan) changed? And did you ever go to the rally at Canton? and meet Tin Hut?
Also am curious if you continued to read (lurk) the forums since you last posted 5 years ago? How often? And how did you remember your log-in password?

Hi janie!
You certainly picked a great time to be looking for a 70's mod. It's a buyers market and a complete reversal from 5 years ago. There are so many to choose from, I'm sure one will find YOU in no time!
Have fun hunting,
Michael

I did go back and read my old posts. My wants have not changed in regard to floor plan and general ideas about what I want to do, but my husband suggested looking for something up to 31ft rather than sticking in the 25-27 ft range. I'm still concerned about hauling something that size since the most I have pulled is a 16 ft flatbed trailer. I guess I can learn.
I did not go to the rally (or meet Tin Hut) and wished I did. It doesn't look like there is one in TX anytime soon.
It had been about three years since I was here. I had to try a few passwords to get it right. After my first marriage ended I knew I would not be able to afford an Airstream. I didn't visit the forums so not to torture myself. Now that life is MUCH better and I am in a great marriage with a wonderful man, Airstream life is within reach again.
Please help me find an Airstream of my own!

Good point, so let me now say we are looking for a 74-early 80's model.

Size might matter here, Janie: the gray tank in my 1974 Sovereign is only 10 gallons.
You'll need a bigger one than that if you like to take long showers. Mind you, I don't know when they got bigger, but I think today they are something like 25 gallons.

Welcome back and good luck with your search! My hubby and I are currently on the hunt for our dream stream too. It may be a buyers market but take it from me - if you find the unit you think you want - pull the trigger! I've had two potentials fall off my line so far. Hubby is much more philosophical "when the AS is right we will get it"
Let us know how your search goes. I'm living vicariously through new owners

My husband says the same thing and I tend to agree with him. However it's the waiting that is killing me.

You got that right! Our camping group has an outing this weekend. I sit here going "boy it would be nice if I had my AS instead of the pop-up". I hope we both find the perfect unit soon. What are you looking for? We are in search of a 25' FB with twin beds.
