Question Old Airstream campers (truck)

I used to camp at Colder Bay Jackson Lake. When I was a child I remember an AirStream Truck Camper...Is that a bad memory or for real. I would like to know the history on that if anyone knows.

It probably was an Avion, they made an aluminum skinned pickup camper, similar to their trailers, which are often mistaken for Airstreams.

I dunno, but I wish I had an old GM truck like that to pull my trailer with.

Silver Streak also made a limited number of truck campers very similar to the Avion units. There was an avion showed up at the TCT Deming campout last August, and about four months ago one was for sale in Seattle (Craigs List) in very reasonable condition for $1,500. I thought too long and too hard about it and was way too late. Sigh. Yep, it would look great on a truck pulling an Airstream. A bit of overkill perhaps, but it sure would be fun.

Question Cahill camper

After Cahill sold Avion to Fleetwood, I think Cahill built some more of the campers under the Cahill name badge. They would do it under special orders. Anyone know about this?

The family name that built the Avion trailers was Cayo. Cayo built truck campers and special orders until the fuel crisis of the mid 70's. Cayo even built a 5th wheel at one point that was aluminum riveted. Bill and Chuck Cayo are still in Watervliet, Michigan and working on restorations and refurbishing of Avion trailers.

Airstream TRUCK CAMPERS

Hi,

Airstream DID build three prototype Truck Campers in the factory for test purposes many years ago. They found that the cost was too much to produce truck campers, and would not be profitable. They scraped the truck campers for tax reasons and never again built a truck camper, instead concentrating on travel trailers and motor homes.
I found this information on-line while researching Airstream.
