Newly acquired 1973 GlobeTrotter

Greetings,

Just bought a 73 GlobeTrotter (21 feet including hitch). The previous owner towed it with a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 liter, 6 cylinder and said it was "fine"
I also have a 2001 Cherokee with the identical engine and would like some advice before spending money on a hitch.

Thanks,
George in Alpine Texas

Hi George,

Welcome aboard! You're probably getting close to the limit there pulling a 21 footer with a Cherokee. But the older ones were lighter than the new for a given length so you may be OK. A V8 Grand Cherokee or Hemi Durango would be better, but you might squeak by if you take it easy.

Is your Jeep an automatic or a manual? If an auto, probably shouldn't tow in overdrive (if it's got one).

For safety, the biggest thing to remember is that having enough chassis is more important than having enough power. In other words, you don't want the trailer to "drive the truck." Your owners manual should tell you what weight the jeep is capable of pulling. You can probably find a published weight of your trailer on these forums by using the "search" feature and looking for weights. But, a better way is to actually take it to a scale. General recommendation is to try to keep the trailer to 80% or less of your tow vehicle's capacity. So if your Jeep was rated to tow 6000lbs, you'd want to try to keep what you tow down to 80% of 6000lbs, or 4800lbs.

Best of luck!

Check out the charts here to give you an idea of the weights for your model.

hi george,

welcome to the forums!

congrats on a great trailer. your tow vehicle is "iffy" at best. you really need an 8 cylinder, think chevy tahoe or the like. yes, you can pull it with what you have BUT can you do it safely is the real question. do a search here for tow vehicles and you'll find a ton of information. it really comes down to what you're comfortable with. there will be people on the board that'll say you are fine and don't worry about. SO you need to do your homework so you can answer the question for yourself.

According to my '73 service manual, the g.v.w.r of a 21' globetrotter is 4500lbs. max tongue weight is 675.
