Newbie Buyers Question?

Should I be concerned about buying a used AS that is in the South because of the possibilities of rust?

The first concern I would have is has the trailer been used regularly. Airstreams that set for longer periods in heat tend to have axle problems due to the rubber in the axle tubes relaxing.

If you can inspect it or have someone look at it for you the trailing arm of the axle, between the axle tube and the spindle should point slightly downwards towards the rear. If the arm is level or pointing upwards be concerned.

My trailer had sat for 3 years in Fl and the axles were shot.

It`s not the heat and humity that`s so bad,it`s how close to beach and how many hurricanes it`s went thru.I`m in Naples ,FL. that`s pretty far south.

It was last used in March or April of this year at a rally.

Also, looking at a 2002 19' Bambi that has sat for 6 years in dry conditions. Wouldn't that present a problem?

That's a good question. I think the safest answer would be "yes, you should be concerned." Just as an example I bought my trailer in January of this year. I was a newbie and didn't know how to do a proper inspection. Later I discovered that the trailer had apparently been sitting near the coast near Corpus Christi, Texas for quite a long time. Eventually I discovered, the hard way, two of an Airstream owner's worst nightmares: frame rot and extreme filiform corrosion. Both of these problems seem to have arose from wet, humid conditions over a long period of time. I'm not trying to discourage you and of course not all trailers from the South necessarily will have those problems depending upon the degree of maintenance or lack thereof. But I would strongly recommend a thorough inspection by a person experienced with Airstream trailers if for any reason you suspect the trailer has not been very well maintained over the years. Good luck, above all have fun, and keep us posted on what you discover!
