Rivet Newbee considering co-ownership

Hi- Anyone with experience in sharing/ co-owning an Airstream with a friend. Bought a 19ft Flying Cloud this spring and am loving it so far. I have a friend who may be interested in co-owning my Airstream. I would love to "share" my Airstream and wonder if there are any experienced co-owners out there? Should I consider 50/50 split?

Thanks,
LMH

Interesting thought and suppose it’s all between the owners, personalities and balance of usage .

If both parties are mutually agreeable, financially fair minded, willing to split storage, insurance, maintenance, upgrades or fix stuff one breaks (dents) it could work out. Agreed house rules: Last user cleans or credits the other one might be a good thing ! No solids down the sink, no paper down the toilet etc…. Come to mind.

May be good to have an agreement with the above and equal miles or days of use to keep it fair. Perhaps a first right to buy-back in the event one wants to sell or assume it 100%.

Had friends split boats, ski cabins and the like and worked out for them and their families for the duration they owned it.

It’s a business deal in the interest of fun in the end.

Best of luck with the concept !

Excellent way to destroy a perfectly happy relationship is all I can think of. Things would have to be soooo perfect. What if one of you lost your job and needed to offload in a hurry. What if the other couldn't afford a buy out and not interested in selling?

Avoid like the plague is all I can say. keep your friend.

Hi

Each time I've done this, one or the other "partners" needs have changed after a couple of years. I'd work out how a "buy out" would work as part of the initial deal. Right now used RV prices are crazy high. A lot of people are suggesting things will change a *lot* in a few years. Just how you factor that in on something that "Blue Book Value" is nonsense .... I have no idea.

Back in the last century, a coworker advised me that you should never ask to borrow a man’s camera or his wife. I would include a man’s Airstream in that set.
Working in the financial component increases the chances of something going awry.
Have you considered that if your friend gets his own Bambi, you could vacation together?
Happy camping!

There’s people who this works with, but for the most part it never does. RVs break a lot. And people damage them fairly frequently. If you can figure a way to share those expenses or might work out. Eric Clapton and George Harrison shared a wife. Apparently they made that work.

If you can't afford to own an Airstream by yourself, you can't afford to lose a good friend. Partnerships are "usually" the fastest way to destroy a good realationship. Been there, done that, but not with an Airstream! JMHO

Keep your friends your friends unless it’s your spouse Just remember:

Friends are friends
Family is family
And
Business is business
Sometimes they mix but rarely.

I’d wait till I could afford my own _______. You fill in the blank. It will make you happier.

Hi

The typical AS is a "single family" sort of thing. Heading out with 4 parents and 6 kids in one is problematic. In a "co-owner" deal, it will be one or the other set using the trailer.

If these folks are good enough friends to consider co-owning. Are they also good enough friends that you would want to do a lot of camping with them? If so, probably not the ideal setup.

“Hey, there’s a dent on one of the the rear left end cap panels. Did you hit a branch last time you were camping?”
“Wasn’t me, it was fine when you picked it up.”
“Well I didn’t do it.”

I wouldn't do it. A lot of headaches involved.
You should own it. If they want to use then rent it to them and they are responsible for any and all damage. A good business agreement will keep them as a friend.

Hi

How many cubic yards of dog fir on the floor is "to much"?

Lots of ways this can go sideways.

At the same time, some folks do make it work and work well. It is highly dependent on the individuals. I suspect it also gets back a bit to both having the disposable income to replace a couple thousand dollar panel without stressing about it ....

It’s been addressed before. Plenty of people share airplanes and boats successfully. Look into the model that they use. The main key is that you can not become personally attached to the Airstream and have to treat it like a business. Disputes over dents should be non existent and covered by insurance.
