New to the AS world

Hello,
We're new members to Airstream "lovers" club and are currently looking for our FIRST Airstream to restore. In negotiations now for either a Pacer, Bambi II or Caravel and are weighing the pros and cons of all. Know that the Pacer is the smalles and has no shower....

Any other issues, concerns these are all units prior to 1966...

We are really interested in joining a vintage camping group in the Northeast/Southeast (based in DC) with our new baby and pulling with a restored 60's vintage car. Would love to hear from you!
Thanks,
TK & Phil

Hello TK & Phil -- Welcome to the Forums! It's hard to keep secrets about lighter, smaller vintage Airstreams. Rule #1 regarding Airstreams is "They all leak." This makes it tough to drive away a 50s or 60s trailer without doing a total restoration first. But keep your eyes open and radar tuned -- in our classifieds here and maybe over at the VAC classifieds. It's a great joy to see a pampered classic, so hang in there for the long term -- acquisition and restoration can take quite a while. Before taking on a restoration of a 60s airstream, talk to someone that has done a shell off. They will be able to give you insight down to the bare bones. Older units come with many issues. It's fun to restore one but it involves a lot of time, a fair amount of money, and a lot of sweat and busted knuckles. Its definately worth it though. Knowing what to look for will help.

Welcome to the forum!

I think you are making a great choice! We have a 1963 Bambi that my hubby did a frame off restoration on, and we love it! It has everything we need! Full bath, refrig, water, heater, the works! All of our appliances are original and they are excellent! Not fancy, but our appliances don't drain the battery power either!

If you want to see what you might be in store for on a frame off restoration, grab a big cup of coffee and click through my hubby's thread... he has lots of pics and discussions, along with how-to information. Have fun!
