New Member Intro

Hi-

I'm a new Airforums member. We don't currently own an Airstream, but have been researching and planning for a year or so. We pulled the trigger on an F250 a month or so ago, so I've been getting used to driving that around, and am almost comfortable, it's by far the largest vehicle I've driven regularly. For the TV pedants out there, I've got 3000 lbs of payload, so I should be able to tow what we're looking for.

Now that we have the TV sorted, I suspect we're going to start looking for a trailer. We've decided on the 27' FTB model, just need to find the right one. I'm looking forward to actually buying one and starting to travel

Welcome Dave!

Sounds like you’ve got this figured out; that TV will handle a 27’ FBT with no problem. We’re in our fifth year with a 3/4 ton and 27’ Globetrotter and love it.

Hope you find yours soon!
-Jeff

Yup. I'm an engineer, so I like a little performance margin, especially if I'm going to be inside said performance margin. Our plans include plenty of Mountains, and perhaps a drive up to Alaska. I had to buy a TV no matter what we did, so I figured the marginal cost adder was worth it.

Now I need to figure out storage, we don't have room at home to park a trailer.

Welcome daveb! DH is a big fan of the F250. It makes an excellent TV. Good luck finding the perfect mate for it!

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

Hi Dave. Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us. The 27FB is a great floor plan. It is very livable for long adventures. Best wishes in your pursuit of the perfect Airstream.

Brian

Welcome! Sounds like your TV is worked out; I also have a 2017 F250 6.7L 4x4, now with 175K miles, towing our 2017 28' FC Twin model. We choose the 28 FC Twin mode because we liked the layout better in 28'. Layout on the 27' is same as the 25's we had earlier in 2 model year 25's. We did not like the "long lounge" seating in the 25' and 27' models, vs the 28' model which has separate dining area for 4 and an L-couch for lounging, which faces the TV. Highly recommend the twin model which ever you end up going with. Storage both inside and out, plus the sleeping area on twins is 68" wide total vs 60" in a queen, plus the twin gives you room to change and make up the beds easier.

Hi Dave. Welcome to the forum and keep us informed as you get closer to getting your AS.

Our first AS was a used 2009 25' FBT. We bought a new 27' Globetrotter in 2018 and is suits us perfectly. It seems like the 25' to 27' models are the sweet spot.

Are you considering a used one or are you thinking of buying new? It seems like there is softness in the RV market at this time so you should be able to get a relatively good deal either way.

And consider joining the AS Club (airstreamclub.org).

All the best in your search!

Welcome aboard Dave,
That 27ft floor plan is a nice one. It is easy to change as required after you determine your likes and dislikes. We have enjoyed ours and have made it our own with many changes. Good luck.

Hi Dave!
Have a 2022 Flying Cloud 25FB for sale here on the classifieds. It’s not the 27 you’re thinking of, but it’s in prime, like new condition, selling due to health reasons.
We tow with a F350, what you have will do the trick!
Contact me if you’re interested.

We have the Globetrotter 27FBT. My sister and BIL had the International 27FBT. We love the ability to reconfigure the dinette into what I call a U shaped gaucho even though we leave 1 of the table leaves up. They couldn't stand the dinette in the International to the point that he ripped the dinette completely out and put in 2 recliners with a wine fridge and a couple drawers. Eventually they traded up to a Classic 30RBT. If your heart is set on a 27FBT, for us the only choice is the Globetrotter.

If you need storage I would start looking now. Where we live it's darn near impossible to find.
AND they raise the rates about every 3 months.

Sounds like you’re a couple years behind me. I went back and forth between a 250 and a 150 and ended up renting a 25’ trailer and borrowing my brothers 150 Powerboost and taking it up to Washington and down the Oregon coast so see how it pulled and to see if we were RV-ers or not having never done it before. After the first two days and all the anxiety that went with it we were sold. The reason we went with the 150 was because the Powerboost would run both our air conditioners IF we ever did boonbocking and they didnt have that option in the 250 plus the 250 was a very stiff ride.

My two cents worth on picking a trailer, Try and rent what you think you want and take it out for a week. I think it cost us around $1200 for the rental. I wanted a 27’ Globetrotter but rented a 25’ Flying Cloud and decided it was a bit tight for us so felt the 27’-er would work. We wanted Twin beds because it feels like a longer trailer with the added hall way down between the beds and it’s easier to get dressed in the middle than along the side of a queen bed. I wasnt impressed with the cushions and how slick they were so when they came out with the Pottery Barn in 2022 we waited for 8 months for our dealership to get one in we could “try out”. That sold us and that is what we ended up getting, a 2023 Pottery barn. We have since spent 90 nights in it over the past two years and Love it. One thing i have realized from the members of the airstream club we are part of is many of them are on their 2nd or 3rd trailers with most of them upgrading to longer ones than they started with. I think that $1200 rental was well worth it to help dial in what you will be happy with in the long run. We have also pulled it 17,000 miles and it pulls beautifully so you will be well equipped to get whatever you want. I was also looking at the 30 and 33 classics and they were just to long for me feeling comfortable being a newbie.

Sounds like your happy. I had the F150 Platinum 4x4 towing 2 different year 25' AS's. I was a bit over my max payload, and although it towed fine, I was really at the limits of this TV. When I got the 28' FCT model AS new in 2017, I also moved up to the F250 6.7L 4x4 King Ranch. Big difference in handling while towing, the payload is 2200lbs and it easily handles the 28' AS; even with the 1150 tongue weight of my 28' FCT. I loved my F150, but towing larger AS than a 25' is pushing it. For sure, if you could have rented and towed a 25' with your F150; then with the F250, you would be able to feel the difference the larger TV provides while towing, especially if you could have compared with a 28' AS towing. Be safe out there..

We've seen pictures of folks that have removed the dinette and replaced it with recliners, and that looks pretty comfortable. I suspect that's something that we'll end up doing at some point if we can't find one like that already.

I looked on Outdoorsey for Airstream rentals, but was unable to find one. I should look again now that I have the truck.
