Been looking on the site for a few months, but we're ready to buy. Hello everyone. I look forward to your advice and conversation in the future. Excited about showing my little boys (5 and 2) around the country in a trailer like my parents did for me.

I have a 1999 Dodge 1500 Quadcab 4x4 5.9L V8 with a tow package and I'm looking to buy a 2000+ 19' to 25' Airstream for $15k to $20K. What should I be careful of, what do I need, what do I don't need, and what should I get for my truck to pull such a beautiful trailer.

Some of my most fond memories as a young fella are from family trips taken around the country in our Pickup Camper, hopefully it will be the same for your boys.

I found a 2000 25' Safari for $18K about 15 months ago. They are out there, maybe even cheaper with the current financial mess.

For a family, I wouldn't go much shorter in length than 23'-25' but 25 is a great length.

Your truck is more than adequate for a trailer that size, you will need a good load equalizer/sway control and that's about it.
There are some threads here in the forums about towing, what to take camping, maintainance, where to go, etc, etc.

Enjoy your search and welcome to the forums!

BTW, we're down in SLO county.

Dave

Welcome to you Don, I don't hear much from streamers near Boulder
Creek. It's good to have you aboard!
I suggest you read here as much as you can before you buy. There are excellent resources here, and great people to help answer any questions you have.
Happy streaming, Rich

Welcome Don...

Great to hear that people still care to get out to see the outdoors with the children while they still think you're cool. The previously posted advice is spot on (IMHO that is). I would add a quality brake controller to the package as well if your Dodge doesn't have one.

Best of luck with your purchase, and by all means keep us posted!!!!

Welcome from Melbourne Florida. Monterey is a beautiful place - spent time there when I was in the Navy. I agree, condition is always a premium price. Be sure and check the classified in rhis forum. Best of success.

Thank you for the responses. Yes, I'm very excited to take my 5 and 2 year old boys around this great country in an Airstream - provided I find one. I think the economy will help. Monterey is such a beautiful place. It will be fun to take off every weekend or so and go down to the Big Sur.
