My boss's first Airstream

Hi all,

My boss (who isn't into forums) just got a '73 Land Yacht Tradewind 25-foot that he's fixing up for an RV event in here in California soon. Will need a lot of advice to pass along to him - hope you can help. Thanks!

Well, that is a pretty nice vintage Airstream. Maybe it is a California born and raised trailer meaning less moisture damage. I have a 75 Overlander 27' which was one model size longer than the Tradewind. I spent a lot of time and money renovating the trailer and I now have a comfortable and reliable traveling Airstream. Photo below:

A good place to study the good, bad and ugly of a 73 Trade Wind would be the Knowledge Base, Airstream trailers found near the bottom of the forums page. This is where folks build a "project thread", or blog as it were. Many folks who have experience often chime in and follow along with a project answering questions where they can. Here is a link to my Overlander thread just as an example. Click on the model name and the year and tell your boss to stay up all night reading threads.

Thanks David! According to the paperwork found inside, it was purchased new at Hart Trailer Sales in the little town of Long Prairie, MN - the dealership was a couple small buildings on Highway 71 way outside of town. Google Street View shows it looking like the middle of nowhere. Not sure when it ended up in San Diego and then Phelan, CA.

By the way, he just got quoted $1400.00 from a local RV mattress outfit for two 32"x75"x10" mattresses - are there better deals out there? Must be made in USA with USA materials, he said.

While my experience isn't recent, given the general increases in prices, that doesn't seem to be too far from what might be expected. It has been 22 years since I had Lebeda Mattress Factory custom fabricate new twin mattresses in approximately the same size for my 1964 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht International. At the time, I paid just short of half of what you are being quoted, but when you compare that to the increases in other costs over the past 22 years, it may well be a decent price in today's marketplace. The nice thing with custom mattresses is the ability to choose the firmness level, the ticking fabric, and which style of cover you want -- smooth top, quilted top, or pillow top.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
