Moving back from Italy to Airstream full time

Wanted to introduce myself, my family and get my first (of many) forum posts out of the way. We are currently living in Italy, but we are planning to move back to the US this summer. Since my job allows me to work from anywhere (as long as there's an Internet connection), we are planning to buy an Airstream and travel the country for at least one year. The family consists of me, my wife, two young daughters and a new puppy.

We have a lot to take care of with the move still, but we will have a lot to do once we get to the US as well. We will need a tow vehicle (looking at Toyota and Nissan primarily), a used Airstream which we plan to fix up a little and all the other things which we haven't even thought about yet.

The plan is to stay with my in-laws for 6 to 8 months, giving us time to purchase what we need, fit up the airstream a bit and then hit the road in February or March of 2017.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We are all extremely excited for this next adventure for our family, but we will definitely be needing some help from the community before we can get on the road.

Welcome! Others with family experience will chime in, I can't be of help there.

Where in Italy are you living?

We're currently living in Padova, which is 30 minutes from Venice.

My sister lives in Caprese Michelangelo, near Arezzo, and runs a campground there.

I've been to that area quite a few times. We've been living in Italy since the fall of 2015, but I actually live here for more than a decade when I was growing up. Most of that time was in Rome, but my family moved up to Padova about a year before I returned to the U.S. for college.

I grew up camping a lot, but we have no experience with RV living. My wife is a minimalist and was actually trying to get us to move into a tiny house before we decided to move to Italy. The leap from a tony house dream to an Airstream isn't that big and the added flexibility that we have for traveling will allow us to see as much as the country as possible (we hope).

To me, an Airstream makes way more sense than a tiny house. Especially if you've ever seen one being towed.
