Looking for PPI in St. Louis area.

Hey All, I am a prospective Airstream owner. It looks like a great community with lots of activity. I am looking for a vintage Airstream and have located one that I am interested in. It is located in the St. Louis area. I live in Ohio. Do any of you know of someone who could perform a PPI in that area? Thanks.

Hi and welcome, maybe eventually to the vintage Airstream hobby. I'm a volunteer inspector, but I'm in the Denver area, not St Louis. However I bet you can find someone to volunteer to help you out. Airstreamers enjoy helping other Airstreamers. It's part of the creed...

The inspection process helps determine the condition of the trailer. The inspectors do not try to "appraise" the trailer; just report on the condition as it sits. Marketing terms like great condition, beautiful, lovely interior, everything works are not part of the inspection process. The process systematically checks all the systems of the trailer, from tires to air conditioner, from ball coupler, to rear bumper. The inspection checklist is found on these Forums. It is some 5 pages long. The process takes me maybe 3 hours. Search for "inspection checklist".

You need to request an inspector by filling out the request form. Look for it on the "Portal" tab at the far left toward the top of the AirForums home page. Then look for Airstream Inspection on the right side of the Portal page about half way down. Fill out the form and hit submit. AirForums the sends your request to folks who have volunteered in the St Louis area. Hopefully some one will reply and you guys can set up an appointment with the seller.

Hope this helps...

David

Great. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately that trailer is no longer listed. But now I have a better idea of how to handle that request in the future. A three hour inspection plus travel seems like a pretty big ask for a volunteer, but it sounds like a very thorough inspection.

Yes, the Airstream community seems very passionate and active. I am retiring in February and hope to join your ranks shortly thereafter. I have some maintenance skills, so I am not afraid to tackle most any repairs. It should be lots of fun.

Thanks again

Bill

You are welcome Bill: Nice to hear you have maintenance skills. Very necessary with Airstream ownership. I enjoy working with my hands and on these old Airstreams. Gives a retired guy something to do.

Here is a photo of my former 1966 Trade Wind. I have maybe 1200 hours in that one. The new owner has made some significant improvements beyond what I did. It is a very nice 24' trailer and quite expensive now.

And here is a photo of my 1975 Overlander 27'. It was pretty nice when I bought it, but had a mild case of "rear end separation" due to a rotted out plywood subfloor at the back of the trailer. That is now repaired, and I've replumbed the entire trailer. I have enough more to do to it to last most of the winter months.

Stay in touch here on Air Forums. You will learn a lot.
