Just bought 1975 Argosy 26- RV Newbie

Hi everyone,

My husband and I just bought our Argosy. He is in south MS now getting ready to bring her home. We are really excited.

I am moving to Birmingham to begin a masters program and he hasnt received a job transfer yet. We couldnt afford 2 separate residences so he decided to buy an RV and live in it until he gets transferred to Birmingham. (Could be 2 months, could be 2 years...) We had been looking at RV's for a while and I wanted an Argosy all along

We dont have the money to get into a full restoration like we would like-maybe when I get out of school and get to work. In the mean time we just need to get her cleaned up mainly. The outside could use painting and the inside is in decent shape. Hubby says it needs "intense cleaning." I have only seen digital photos. The flooring is not original and some cabinet outer doors have been replaced. Still has theorange formica counter tops and other seventies attributes.

We only have a little less than 2 months to get her into shape. Wish us luck.
-Amy

Hi and welcome. Argosys are cool. As for the orange counters - we got rid of them - but orange is back in style.....

Welcome to the forum. We just recently upgraded from a Argosy Minuet to a 23' Safari. It was a good trailer and got a lot of attention in parks.

Poor Pathfinder

My hubby is still making the trip home with our Argosy. Our Nissan Pathfinder (which usually gets around 16 mpg) is averaging 8.3 mpg and he keeps having to stop for gas, etc. He said the truck is running a little warm and all the Argosy has it squatted down in the back. Bless his heart. I feel like it is the never-ending journey home for both him and the RV.

Thanks everyone for their well-wishes and welcomes. Does anyone know if there is an order to fixing up one of these babies? I just don't even know where to begin cleaning. If I had the money I would love to redecorate a la 1975, shag carpet, etc but all new and nice. We will have to do a little along as we can and see what happens.

Several things to keep in mind in regard to the tow vehicle:
  • Regarding the temperature control issue there are several items that could be contributing factors
    • Be sure that there is a high-capacity transmission fluid cooler installed if one wasn't included as part of the truck's trailer tow package.
    • Towing in direct drive rather than overdrive is a necessity with many of (if not most) of the 1/2-ton tow vehicles to keep transmission temperatures in control.
    • Towing will also quickly identify a coolant thermostat or exhaust heat riser valve that is "frozen" in a partially closed position.
    • Towing can also identify a radiator pressue cap that isn't holding pressure properly.
  • Regarding the rear end squat on the tow vehicle. This is a problem that can easily be solved, and needs to be solved for safe towing.
    • If the truck/trailer combination is equipped with a weight distributing hitch, there is a problem with the adjustment of the hitch.
      • The ball height may need adjustment. The factory called for a hitch height of 19.5", but this setting may need to be decreased to reflect settling that may have occurred over time in the Henschen DuraTorque axles.
      • The weight distribution bars may need to be adjusted for greater tension, or the bars may not be of sufficient weight rating for your trailer/tow vehicle combination.
    • If the rig doesn't have a weight distributing hitch, the squat is a definite indicator that one is needed. The empty coach has a hitch weight of 500 pounds with a trailer empty weight of 3960 pounds. In all probability, the coach will weigh in at about 5,500 pounds with a loaded hitch weight approaching 700 pounds when the coach if fully outfitted for use.

There isn't a particular order, and for many of us, the intended use dictates the order to some extent. The first order is typically to get running gear and safety equipment into good operating condition. Then making repairs to, and/or replacing the appliances and systems that are necessary for the coach's intended use. With an Argosy, protecting the galvanized steel domes at either end with a coating of paint is a necessity to prevent potential problems with rust. With my Overlander, my method of attack was to get the coach prepared for immediate, safe use; and then I prioritized the restoration/refurbishment as funds permitted -- it took a little more than five years with that coach as I am not a do-it-yourselfer and contracted for most of the labor.

Good luck with your Argosy -- the Argosy coaches are wonderful traveling companions.
