Newbie here. Newbie to the AS world and this forum that is. Just wanted to get my first post out of the way before I relegate myself to endless hours of reading. I just inherited what i believe to be a 65 model Land Yacht, although i dont see that model as an option to choose from in the profile. I plan to restore this camper to the point where everything is at least functional.

Perhaps if anyone would like to help me exactly identify the make and model of this particular camper that would be a good place to start. The plate just outside the front door has a 65 stamped in it and has the signature picture of a woman on a bicycle towing an airstream. I will be posting pictures soon, and will start the resoration with some new cusions and new plumbing. I hope i find a home here and lots of friendly help. From the posts I have already read, this seems like a great bunch of folks.

During the 1960s, Land Yacht was the base trim level for Airstreams with International being the deluxe trim level. Also, during this time period, the length of the coach related directly to its series name -- with Pacer (1960-61), Bambi (1961-63) Bambi II (1964), and Caravel (1965-1970) being the shortest (depending upon year); next in size was the Globetrotter; then the Flying Cloud/Safari; next would be the Tradwind (single axle pre '64/tandem axle post '64); Overlander was the next step larger; Ambassador was the next step larger than the Overlander; and the largest of the 1960s Airstreams was the Sovereign.

Some general characteristics of the coaches would include:

• Door-within-a-Door screen door arrangement 1964 and before;
• 1964 and before, larger coaches would have a set of jalousie windows ahead of the entry door.
• 1965 was something of a transitional year with the windows being similar to earlier years, but was the first year for a separate door and screen door arrangement.
• 1966-68 coaches had Corning tempered glass windows -- that until very recently were nearly impossible to replace if broken -- reproductions became available during the past year.
• Pre-1965 coaches had Zolatone painted interior walls while most 1965 and later coaches had vinyl-clad aluminum interior walls.

Kevin, was the Excella also a trim level?

I am less familiar with the 1970s Airstreams as most of my research for that era has focused on the Argosy coaches. It has been my understanding, however, that Excella started out as a trim level on the larger trailers in the 1970s and later became a model in the 1980s but I don't have any specific documentation that confirms this information.

Thanks a lot. If anyone here actually owns one of these I would love to see some more pictures of how your cushions work and store and foldout. I do not have the originals and and am not real sure how to tell the upholstery guy how they originally worked.

I am really looking forward to this project, this is going to be a lot of fun.
