Hi from NY

Hi all, my name is Josh and my wife Emily and I are currently looking for an Airstream. We are leaning towards a 23' or 25' trailer (probably a 25' based on all the information I have already gathered from the forums). I would not want to go longer that 25' since we have never towed anything before and due to the limitations of some sites. We initially thought we would buy new but given what I have read, I think a 3-4 year old used model (that has taken the depreciation and is in good condition) or better yet a renovated vintage unit may be a better option. I will be pursuing the latter option in the next few months and fall back to the first option if I am priced out. We don't have a tow vehicle yet but we will pick one out after we have finalized which Airstream we will be getting (probably a used truck).

I have been reading the forums the last few weeks and I have to say that I am very impressed with this community. I've learned so much already and I know I've only scratched the surface. I hope that one day we are able to give back to the community as much as we will get out of it.

See you in the forums!

Try 'em on for size

If you're in eastern NY - go visit Colonial Airstream and spend a day sitting in each model. Test the beds, the bathroom access and seating room and imagine being stuck inside for 3 or 4 rainy days. That will do more to clarify what you'll be happy with than anything else can. You don't want to make a mistake and then need to trade up or down.

Colonial does get a few used Airstreams in from time to time. I note that they have a Safari 27 FB SE in right now that might be your cuppa tea. Oh and if you get in the car now, you'll be there by the time they open tomorrow. (written at 11:28 PM Friday)

You CAN get a 27 into most federal and state parks. And you still might be the smallest thing there.

Welcome. Paula

Welcome Josh. I second what Paula said. The folks at Colonial are great.

Thanks all. I am actually fortunate in that there are 2 dealers not too far from me. I've already been to RV Legends (in Waterbury CT) but that was before I discovered this website. Talk about not knowing what I was talking about Now that I have been reading this forum I feel like I will be much better equipped for when I do go down to Colonial Airstream in the next few weeks. I'll probably also want to go to one of the shops that renovate vintage Airstreams before I buy anything but I haven't done too much research into where those are located yet.

Hey Josh,
I'm about 10 minutes from you and I'm currently working on my 56 Safari. If you want to check it out, let me know. My blog is here: 1956 Vintage Airstream - A Classic Travel Trailer from Wally Byam and Co.

Hi 1956Safari, wow I am really impressed with the progress you have made on your AS. I can't even imagine all the different skills one would need to be able to renovate a vintage unit from scratch. My wife and I would love to come see it if you are ready to show it off! We would be happy to help if you want another pair of hands (what we lack in skills, we make up in enthusiasm ).
