Oh gee, small world. I sat several of the oil wells as wellsite geologist across the border in the Hardtner field in Hardtner, KS. Top of the Mississippian chat play. Seems like I went down to Alva for the motel?, but that was in the mid 80's. Remember one well we were drilling blind, lost circulation with no returns to the surface, we drilled ahead anyway from confidence in the hole wall cake. Then the mud pump went down, was way below zero and the stand pipe froze up; normal winter day in KS. There was always oil in the top of the chat, but a lot of those wells didn't produce because the formation was oil wet, not water wet and the formation was impermable to oil flowing to the well bore. Horizontal drilling through the chat would make a well but was way expensive.
