Hello from Canada

Hi, fellow Airstreamers!

We're fairly new to the family, having owned our '92 29' Excella for a little over a year.

My husband has had a love affair with Airstreams for years, so when the opportunity to own one came about, he virtually jumped at the chance. He had to do some talkin' to convince me that owning a trailer was a good thing, but now that we've spent some time traveling, any reservations I may have had have disappeared.

We're also boaters, owning a 35' Chris Craft tri-cabin. We've spent the past 20 years boating in the summers, with the exception of the summer of 2005. Last year, we hitched up the Airstream and headed to Eastern Canada, where we spent 5 weeks exploring New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. To say the trip was outstanding wouldn't do it justice. We had only planned on being away for 3 weeks, but were having such a good time, we took the extra 2 and even then, didn't want to come home.

We both look forward to reading about the adventures of fellow Airstream owners, and having this community as a resource for all things Airstream will be a blessing.

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on new toy! Canadian Rockies are spectacular, and Alberta and BC could easily be another 6 week tour.. We compressed Rockies and Glacier Park to single week, and felt we were a little rushed...

I'm curious how easy your impromptu tour of Eastern Canada went in mid summer? We are trying to decide whether to join Caravan or organized group to assure reservations and ferries, etc, or just go solo and hope for places to stay to be available... Did you encouter others in groups and have a chance to talk with them about their experiences? Long run from California to get there, but semi-retirement has begun, and next summer is looking very likely..

John, we ran solo and had no difficulties whatsoever. The travel guide provided free by PEI tourism is a great tool. It lists all the available campgrounds and provincial parks, the fees and the amenities, as well as all the attractions and festivals in the various areas of the Island. That guide and a cell phone is all that was needed. We never made reservations, calling only when we found ourselves in a particular area and we were never turned away. That's not to say there weren't a lot of other travelers, indeed we met some wonderful people from all over North America. Strangely, we only ever saw one other Airstream. Imagine!

We had similar experiences meandering around lower BC and Alberta and Canadian Rockies around the time of July 4th/Canada Day holidays, and thought we were just very lucky.. Our only anxiety was at Lake Louise Campground right below the Lake, which does not take reservations, but we timed our arrival for mid-day and drove in and had no problem getting a space. Photo in Avatar is of the Condoluminum securely parked in the trees at Lake Louise Provincial Park...

If anyone is heading to PEI this summer stop in and say hi. We have a summer cottage in Rusticoville on Rustico Bay with views of North Rustico village. We've been there for 30 years and after retirement 6 years ago we spend summers there. We'll be there from Jul to Sep and would love the company of fellow AS's. We could supply 20A electric for short visits and there are plenty of campgrounds in the area for extended visitors. If you have any questions about the Island we might be able to answer feel free to contact us. Contrary to what a caravaner wrote in the Airstream magazine over the winter there is much more to PEI than Anne of Green Gables. If the caravans go through the Atlantic Provinces so quickly as to just hit the highlights do yourself a favor and go solo or with friends and see the real Maritimes. Anyhow, stop in for a visit if you can.

We reside in Northern Alberta.....However, am originally from Nova Scotia, and in the summer there is lots to do...If you are in Nova Scotia, you may want to consider going over the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, there are many campsights along the route. Also, the mainland has many places to go, especially along the South Shore of Halifax, there are many towns that have festivals in the summer, etc. If you go to Tourism Nova Scotia on the provinces website there are many links for alot of things to do during the summer months. You won't regret it!
