You live near what was the midway point for me when my family was in Carbondale, IL and I worked near Hays, Kansas. I always knew that I had endured the heaviest traffic of the trip when I got to the West side of Kansas City on my way back to Northwest Kansas. You are also just around the corner from where this year's Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI)/Airstream Club International -- International Rally is being held. The International Rally is being held in Sedalia, Missouri from October 5 through 10 on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. There is a large Vintage Airstream group that attends the International and they parage onto the Rally ground on Saturday, October 5 beginning at 3:00 PM. The Vintage Airstream Club Open House is scheduled for Sunday, October 6, from Noon to 4:00 PM. The public has been welcomed for these two events in the past as I am sure they will be this year as well. The Vintage Club is parked in a specific area, and there are nearly always several Airstream products from each decade of the Vintage production. This is a good opportunity to meet owners and see Airstreams that have been restored to original as well as some that have been modernized.
As a new owner, one question that you may wonder about is the Owner's Manual. Airstream didn't publish an official Owner's Manual until the
1964 model year. Prior to
1964, the original owner was provided with a manila envelope filled with owner's manuals, installation guides, and other types of literature for every appliance and mechanical device installed in the trailer. Even after
1964, the Manila envelope with the variety of documents accompanied the Owner's Manual. Sadly, with the number of changes between
1957 and 1964, a 1964 Owner's Manual wouldn't provide much help with your 1957.
The Overlander is a special trailer to me, since it is the trailer that I first camped in as a five year old when the 1964 Overlander was new. At that time it was owned by friends of my family, and they regularly parked their Airstream on our family farm when they visited each summer. I purchased the trailer, unknowingly, from its second owners in 1995, and have enjoyed it ever since.
I would encourage you to consider joining the
Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI)/Airstream Club International (ACI) as well as the local Unit nearest you. Each Unit has activities nearly every month, and it really helps to get the greatest value from your rig -- and you are welcome to participate in the activities of other Units as well. There are a number of Intra-Clubs or you might think of them as sub-clubs, and one that I would suggest is the
Vintage Airstream Club as this group is dedicated to preservation and restoration of Vintage Airstream Product RVs.
Good luck with your Overlander, and Enjoy!
Kevin
