Hello

I am new to this and have not been to a chat room before so bare with me. I just picked up my granparents 1949 Clipper airstream serial #2001. Its a bit rough but I have alot of fond memories of summers spent in it while staying with my grandparents. Is there a value to these old airstreams. How about parts to fix them back up?

Well, memories are worth a lot! The trailer may be also depending on condition.
Welcome to the forums, post photos if you have them. We all enjoy them, and it will help folks give you an idea of what you have.
Dave

Edit: Also, check out the thread on the Branson Spring Rally being held in your area.

First off...welcome, and please post some pics for us.

Second...am I the only person in Missouri that is looking for a good vintage trailer and cannot find one?

You can click the link for the forums, and actually search for the clippers that are under restoration there. Use the search button up top to fin specific info on subjects.

Again...welcome.

Steve

Welcome to the forums.

You are so lucky to have a trailer that you have history with. Vintage Airstreams are highly prized and the Clippers have a very strong following.

Use the search function upper right and you'll learn a lot about others who have trailers like yours, as well as finding various parts suppliers, and don't hesitate to ask questions.

It is amazing how excited people get when you tow a vintage Airstream and the Clipper models are very unique looking. Be prepared for a lot of questions and requests for tours when you have it back on the road.

We love pictures here. If you are able and willing to post some of the exterior and interior it would be much appreciated.

Thanks, and hope to see you on the road.
Barry

A big welcome to you and your Clipper. Yes, pictures would be wonderful. The earliest Airstreams like yours are always of value. Many vintage owners wish their trailers could talk. But you have the advantage of provenance. You know it's history and have wonderful memories attached. Now you can continue it's story.

Your 49 Clipper is a highly desireable vintage Airstream, and of course valuable to a vintage connosuer. The small Airstreams are fairly easy to work on and can be useable and fun campers. The age and style will actually be a big plus and will comand lots of attention and admiration wherever you take it.
There is probably any kind of information you may need to help you along with fixing it up, right here on the Forum. Check out the "search" function, you'l be amazed at the wealth of information at your finger tips. There are also lots of sources for information, parts and services on the internet. If you wish to update it with modern plumbing and electrical systems, everything is readily available. If you wish to keep it in original, as- built configuration, that will be a bit more difficult and time consuming, but still doable.
The first thing you should do before towing it anywhere, is replace the running gear if it is still original. That would include axcel, hubs, brakes, and wheels. The original wheels were of the split rim type and should be discarded. The tires should be replaced a maximum of 5 years, regardless of appearance, mileage, and tread depth. Your propane tanks will also need to be replaced or updated if they haven't already been.
Otherwise, if every thing else has been maintained, go camping, and may your own grand children someday enjoy it with you.
