Hello!

Hello, I am Chuck! My wife Shelly and I just purchased a gutted 1972 AS Sovereign on Sunday. Aluminum is in pretty good shape, but we have a lot of work ahead! I will be scouring these forums for knowledge, so thank you in advance for all of the wonderful posts and info! We are located in NE Ohio - never restored one of these, but it looks like a challenge.

Welcome.

Looks basically decent from the picture.

There is a wealth of information on restoring Airstreams on this forum. The Blue search box at the top of the page that says 'Airforums" and has a gray 'Search' button in it will be your best friend. There are a lot of forum threads that address the subject.

There are also lots of people here that have "Aluminiumitis" and will be able to answer your questions. Look in threads on your trailer model, and restoration threads for lots of fine examples, and help around the pitfalls, of which there are many.

Hi

Welcome !!!

Have you done any "investigation" of the floor and frame yet? Gutted sort of implies at least the floor is visible .....

And greetings from Colorado: Welcome to the vintage Airstream hobby. You bought a project trailer than someone else gave up on for whatever reasons. Airstreams come apart pretty easy, but go back together much harder. You're going to have a lot of cabinets to make and systems to create.

I have a 75 Overlander that I'm working on. It is not as large of a project that you have, but it still keeps a retired guy busy. You might like to take a look at my project thread linked below. And you might like to start one yourself. There is an excellent project thread titled "Lil Girl Refurb" by Minno here on the Forums. It is a 72 Sovereign that they completely renovated. You may gain some knowledge and get some ideas from thread. Use the search feature to find it.

Well, let's get started.

David

Yes, I pulled the bellypan off today, insulation is now out and I pulled up half of the floor. Frame has been painted, very little rust - just a few out riggers to repair. Going to be checking out the forums for fender and floor info tonight!

Hi

If you can avoid pulling the shell to fix things up ... that's a really big plus !!!

Agreed, I do not have to pull the shell. I am replacing the floor, however!

Hi

Doing a full floor replacement without pulling the shell can be painful .....

Greetings Chuck,

Long time ago drove thru Mogadore in one of my excursion in my home state. People ask what's that flag for on your rig? Many have never seen the State of Ohio Burgee. Proudly flies on our rig but now SC is home.

Good luck with the project.

Gary
