Good Sam Emergency Road Service

Hi all -- we are new to Airstreaming with a new-to-us 2008 16' International CCD. We have done a couple of short overnight trips so far -- 100 miles round-trip or less. We are planning a longer trip this summer: Texas to Illinois, Indiana, maybe Michigan, then back to Texas.

We joined the Good Sam club. They are offering new members a discounted price of $74.95 for a year's coverage under their Emergency Roadside Assistance Plan, which covers both the trailer and the tow vehicle. That sounds like a "good deal" to us, but we don't have any experience or comparison to help us evaluate the deal.

Do any of you on the Airstream Forum have experience or an opinion which might help us make a decision on this?

Thanks,
Bennett and Dianne

Our TV broke down along side a highway a year ago. I called GS and they offered to send 2 trucks, one to tow our Airstream on to our destination, about 20 miles, and the other truck to a repair garage. While this was occuring a good samaraton stopped and offered for a very fair price to do a roadside repair. I called GS an explained that I may not use the tow service. They said that they would keep my name and should the roadside repair not be successful for me to call and they would send their trucks pronto. The repair was a success and as we continued on our journey GS called to ask if all was okay. We are very impressed. Your second year coverage will be higher but well worth it.

Good Sam is good

Yes, we have Good Sam Emergency coverage and the one time we have had to use is (on July 4 off I5 near Grants Pass in Oregon) they came in less than hour to change our tire.

It is my understanding that GS knows what to do with RVs....we still have AAA for the truck and maps but GS covers all of your vehicles. It sounds like your first year is a bargain. paula

Glad to be of help

One other point that we were told about AAA---that their service can vary state to state.....so they may be great for RVs in one state but not in another....and while I don't have personal experience about this, it seemed to be too daunting for me to verify this one way or another. It was just simpler to get GS and know that RV emergency service is their business and they expect to have to deal with it when they are called.

Hope to see you down the road.

A few years ago I was in Arizona in the middle of summer (120+ degrees) lost a tire south of Tucson on my TV. I called AAA first and they said maybe an hour. I then called Good Sam Emergency and they were there in 15 minutes, got my spare and put it on. I even tried to tip the dude but he wouldn't take it. I still have Good Sam but quit AAA, they suck.

We've had GS ERS for many years... It's one of those things you pay for and hope to never use. I've had only 2 experiences and both were good. I called, described problem and my location. In a few minutes I received a call to let me know they located a service truck and provided an eta. They then called back again after the service truck arrived to verify that it had and to gauge my satisfaction with the service provider and to verify that my problem was resolved and I was back on the road. I've not had experience with AAA or any of the others as Good Sam has not given me any reason to jump ship.

We had AAA for years, on the truck and trailer--last year on our way home (Calif) from North Carolina we lost a rear tire on the trailer, called AAA, they showed in 45 min. replaced the tire with spare and held out his hand for a tip when he as done, said "$100 was a normal repair tip" I gave him a $20 and left feeling I was asked to pay twice for our AAA coverage the ($100 tip asked for) Now have Good Sam Coverage.

I have had GS for about 20 years. I have only used it once when the serpintine belt broke. I was towed in, the belt replaced and was on my way, all by the tow truck driver. With the Good Sam ERS, they are "like a good neighbor, i'm in good hands and I don't leave home without it."
They also have my home and cars. When in an accident, not my fault, THEY had the car repaired and than collected from the other party. No deductables and questioned why I didn't request a rental car. They said they would have covered that too.
There were NO injuries.
