Getting Ready to Adopt

Hi,

I am just now getting into camping in a "previously owned" Airstream, still getting quotes. I haven't been camping in years and that was in a tent when my children were small. I am looking forward to taking a week-end here and there and seeing some places I haven't seen and relaxing. I hope that my experience will be a good one. Hope to meet some fellow campers and hear about their experiences and learn more about the ins and outs of camping these days as well as taking care of my new trailer.

Hi, Pilotrep and neighbor to the north slightly east, welcome to the forums and the "Leisure World of Airstream." Camping has advanced a bit since it was called "camping." There's not much roughing it involved these days, even with the vintage Airstreams. Your experience will largely be related to what you put into it, and the folks here will go out of their way to give you good advice and timely help.

Let us know what Airstream you're considering, and we just may have some comments and suggestions. :-)

Lamar

Hi and thank you for your inquiry. I am looking at a 1979 Soverign 31' a 1974 - 31' international; a 1975 -28' international; and a 1973 - 31' land yacht. The prices vary, all seem to be in pretty good shape. I have only seen pictures over internet and spoke with owners. I am trying to make up my mind and decide what kind of hitch I need to put on my truck. I have 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab; Hemi that does not have a towing package on it and I think that the bumper might have to be replaced. I want to get into this with the least expense I can to make sure I am going to enjoy it as much as I dream I will. So, what do you think about the ones I am perusing and do you have any advice on the hitch?
Thank you so much.
Marilyn

I believe only the 79 has a grey water tank. The other ones you will have to carry around a blueboy for your wash water and with the size of your family that could be a big inconvience to continually empty it as most campsites in the east will not let you put washwater on the ground. Since you are in the east you may not be climbing many mountains and that could make it easier on your truck. I had a 3/4 ton van and the Reese twin cam hitch is what I used for ten years. An equivalent hitch with a anti sway device of some sort is likely all that you need. The articulated hitches would be more expensive and some people think they are worth it. It depends on your budget and how much you will use the unit per year.
