First Airstream

I will take delivery in California of our very first RV trailer in early October. It is a new 2012 19" Flying Cloud CNB with a solar panel as the accessory. My TV is a custom ordered early 2007 Mercedes ML 320 CDI with the factory installed hitch that was re-welded by a Mercedes recall in either 2007 or 2008. A Reese 800/8,000 pound Straight-Line dual cam load distribution hitch will connect the two vehicles and the brakes will be tickled by a Tekonsha Prodigy RF Electronic Brake Control.

Having been on many motorcycle forums, I knew to start reading and asking questions and have already learned a great deal in the first few hours of reading. My list of questions to ask of the dealer is onto the second page. The deposit is in place, but the big money has yet to change hands. Hopefully, the dealer provides the correct answers to those items of concern mentioned by members on this forum.

During the shakedown cruise, the trailer and I will travel from the CA dealer to home plate in the Gold Canyon, AZ area. Then the adventure begins.

After reading this and other RV related forums and talking on the phone from the UK with some of the Gurus listed herein and a few other members in Canada, I found that my initial Airstream selection based upon a perceived towing capability was smaller than necessary. Many folks stated during these conversations that the 25' models are the sweet spot in the Airstream product line up. Doing more research and working with the dealer, we changed the original 19' Flying Cloud order to a 2013 Airstream International Serenity 25FB model with the taupe ultra leather interior. We opted for adding Centramatic wheel balancers (based upon my experience with these on two Honda Gold Wing motorcycles), a 150 watt solar panel (with the capability to add two more 95 watt solar panels in the future), Airstream awnings on the road side and rear of the trailer, and replaced three exterior access panels with stainless steel versions. The unit factory options include a second TV in the bedroom with enhanced sound system, a 600 watt inverter and the comfort convenience package.

A Hensley Arrow hitch will be fitted to the trailer (which is currently located in California) after I get back from having the Mercedes factory hitch properly welded with more supports by Andy Thomson's crew at Can-Am in London Ontario. They will also add a Tekonsha P-3 brake controller.

Driving back and forth across 4,200 miles of the US and getting all the accessories ordered in and installed pushed the projected pickup date to 22 October.

Many thanks to all those who have posted their thoughts, concerns and experiences over the years to this and other RV related forums. That information opened my eyes to more enhanced possibilities and to think outside the box about this RV activity.
