Considering a motor home

My wife and I have been sailors for over 30 years and are now considering purchasing a used motor home. We are just retired and can spend some time "on the road".
Airstream seems to be a quality name and we appreciate that. But many questions remain; i.e. diesel vs gasoline. The four adverts found today all have 454 Chevy/GMC engines, which I believe are gasoline. What are your mileage and reliability experiences?
Is there discrimination in space rental? We were told there are few spaces available for 35 foot and larger motor homes.
As I said, just starting to consider this mode of transport, so any direction and/or guidance is appreciated.
