boondocking?

Hello; As a new member I certainly having a bit of difficulty initially navigating this website---- I know, patience is a virtue.
We are new to Rv'ing. We plan on taking a trip this April from our home in Eastern Ontario down to the Myrtle Beach area. Our intersts are in following up on history and the Civil War.
As we travel to and especially from (heading home) are there ways to find out where one can stop briefly overnight without paying the big buck? I am told that Walmart stores allow this. Any advice would be appeciated.
Regards

We like short overnight stops at major truck plazas. Most are RV friendly. They are active 24x7 and fairly secure. Many have an RV dump station. We have found a few that even offer 30 amp RV electric for $10.00. One of these is the Petro on I-81 near Scranton, Pennsylvania. We have stayed there for the night several times. If you're a Good Sam Member, they will give you a $1 of the electric.

Most Wal-Mart stores do allow overnighting in their lots (not saying we have done this... more than 1,000 times, that is!). We have found The Next Exit guidebook (what's at all of the exits on all American Interstates) to be very helpful in locating camping areas, Wal-Marts and truck stops. You can order it on-line or pick it up a an RV dealer. As moosetags says, truckstops are good too, if you can handle the truck generators running all night. Also state welcome centers and rest stops have truck/RV parking and a lot of them have RV dumps as well. It tells you which ones in The Next Exit.

Good luck, and happy camping!

Susan

Overnight Stops

Welcome to the forums Brian. Here's some websites to look at. They will tell you if overnight parking is available at what locations.

Family Restaurants: Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Restaurant
Welcome to Flying J Travel Plazas Website! Wi-Fi Hotspot Truck Stops
Welcome to Love's - Travel Stops & Country Stores

And this thread discusses Wal Mart overnight parking:

Use the search...

Select search, use advanced, type "cheap or free in" in the keywords and then select the boondocking forum. You should see several hits for at least one of the states you're going through.

Brian, come on down! Flying J truck stops are all RV friendly with dumps and parking.
When you get down this way give me a call. If I'm in the area I'd love to say hello.
If you come inland from Myrtle Beach you'll find lots of civil war historical spots. My home is right in the thick of General Sumter's stomping grounds and there is a museum here as well as up in Camden.
Again feel free to give me a call, wish I had CP to offer but don't. I Wal-Mart three nights a week when I'm on the road.
