Aspiring Airstreamer in Austin

Hi!
I'm am aspiring Airstreamer who has been lurking in the forums for a while and have read Tim Shephard's book "Restoring a Dream." I'm trying to devise a plan for my future Airstream to pay for itself (or at least offset some costs) by renting it through AirBnb.

Before I start looking at A/S in person, we have to move some dirt over a ditch and open up our fence so that we can bring the trailer onto an empty lot we own outside of Austin. That, and find the best home equity loan!

Because one A/S is just not ambitious enough, I am also thinking of getting a stripped-out trailer to use as a backyard studio for myself and my husband, with electric but no plumbing. I posted in the Dollars and Cents / Buyer's Guide subforum about a gutted A/S I'm looking at, wondering if it is too far gone to consider. Not sure I put it in the best subforum, but I'd appreciate your thoughts!

Third, has anyone been to the spring Hill Country rally in Johnson City (in April)? I should go check that out but wasn't sure whether it was a rally for vintage, late model, or both. And do rallies even welcome wannabes like me? 😂

I have already learned so much from these forums, and look forward to being a part of the community.

Welcome kmel,

I can't say too much about using an Airstream as a studio, but there are person that use Airstreams for all kinds of uses. Mobile studios, kitchens and the like.

As for the Spring rally, I tend every year and there are all kinds of Airstreams there. it's more like bring what you have. This is an informal rally or get together to cuss and discuss and enjoy a relaxed weekend and a place to see the sights that are around, especially the Bluebonnets.

A few prospective Airstream owners come by to look at the various trailers and layouts of them so they can get an idea of what they would like in their trailer. So, we welcome them all.

You should check out the guy on South Congress in Austin that has 5 Airstream trailers in his back yard and rents the entire venue out on weekends on AirBandB. I can't remember the name of his venue but it's very near Guerro's and Home Slice. There is another person with a venue East of Weird in Giddings I think. He has a couple of Airstreams and tents and a pavilion that he rents out for weekends. I don't think I've seen anything for weekend rentals West of town in the Hill Country around Drip. Best of luck to you, I hope it works out. Have you seen the #ATXAirstream that the city built to promote live music events?

Austin512 - I think the South Congress guy has all late model airstreams! I haven't been there but I've seen a video. There are a few AS rentals on AirBnb, one in Dripping Springs, one near Henley on the road to Blanco, and one in Wimberley. I think Dripping Springs is hurting for lodging options ... it's the "wedding capital of Texas" but there's only one hotel and it's on the outskirts.

Sphere Guy - Well see you in April then! Thanks!

I'm coming to Austin in 2-3 weeks. If you want to join me I'll share a review of mine. It's been cleaned out, floors lifted and frame restoration in progress. Also, the coach has been polished over the last two weeks. I plan to replace water and holding tanks and take it to dallas for the replumb, interior cabinet work and new appliances. Private message me and I can give you a phone number.
