Hello Gary -- and welcome to the Forums! Are you looking to head to warmer states in the winter? Sounds interesting anyway.
If you want to tow sooner rather than later, 1983-84 is a good break point to aim for. Older than that and you'd be looking at potential axle replacement and lighter weight frames (search on: rear end separation). It's harder on the axles if the trailer has sat for some years (?5) without being moved. Replace tires right away if they're older than 4-5 years old.
The used Airstream market tends to concentrate in classifieds at this site, at Vintage Airstream Club's classifieds
, at the mothership's classifieds
, and at Craigslist
. It helps to watch over a period of time and keep returning to those sites -- especially Craigslist (and
narrow down Craigslist's geographic locations you'd consider).
It's possible to recruit some help from Forums members to check out a distant Airstream to see if it's worth looking into, but you'd better rely on your own firsthand judgement before making a purchase. eBay? Buyer beware...
How you going to use it? What're you thinking about? Always good to hear somebody else's story!
