Airstream widths?

Ok, I've been lookin' at this and other sites for a while now, but this is my first post. Not quite sure how this all works, but am currently tryin' to find the perfect trailer to buy!. The only problem I have comin' from the UK is that I'm limited on width. The maximum I can tow here would be an 8' 4" wide load, I've found Airstream weights pdf very usefull on lengths etc but was wonderin' if any of you could tell me when 8' wide units first came into production and which year they stopped. By the way, thanks to the folks that said hello on the intro's page, am lookin' fwd to hearin' from more of y'all.

Y'all? Are you from southern England? Welcome to the Forum. I'm interested to learn the width of these trailers too. I know someone will be able to give you the information you need. If you can't find it here, I don't think you can find it anywhere.

As far as I know up until 1968 Airstream trailers were 7'6" wide, and then they changed to 8 feet wide. My 1968 Ambassador is 7'6" wide.
In the UK the law is that for a towing vehicle of less than 7500 kgs gross weight the trailer must not be more than 7'6" wide, and it can't be more than 7 meters long, not including the drawbar.
So the biggest Airstream you can tow in the UK with a 4x4 is a pre 1968 Overlander (26'). It will be required to have working brakes, so you will require a brake controller, or convert it to over run brakes which means changing the axles.

The new Airstreams, 19', 20' or 23' are all 8' wide.

Go to the airstream site and read the spec's.

Also they are now manufacturing a European model that will meet all of the requirements. Including the oddities like electricity or in particular the waste water disposal!

Matsfab, Love the 101" 1Ton Forward Control. My sons favorite truck especially the "Vampire" body. I like the Radio bodied verson but they seen to be to few and far between especially in good shape. Is that what you'll be towing with? I know it has the gearing but can you get comfortable highway speeds?

So what model year did the wider body begin?

I am confussed by this. are you saying that the '68 is the old width of 7'6" and the '69 started the 8' width?

I have a '63 safari that BARELY fits thru my stone fence, but I am looking to buy a '68 GT and don't want to find a mistake on the width until I bring her home! Thanks!

You know, the only time I wish my '86 Sovereign was 6" wider is when I pass the side bath and when I try to make the rear corner bed up. The cooking area and the front entertainment area seem to have all the room I need.
