Soy,

You're actually S/OS #31
I thought Mike28 was #31? I would like to camp next to Soy for a photo shoot! Sounds like a road trip.

A pay cut means I'll have to cut back on my coffee pot collecting.

SO/S #15 has been been carried by Marathon's ST and Maxxis ST tires in its life. Both brands of tires have failed with belt separations. I went to 16" Michelin's in July of 2012. So far the Michelin's have passed the service life of either of the ST brands. Personally I don't believe the ST tires are reliable once you hit 3 years of service if you are using them on a tandem axle slide out. The Marathon's failed at the end of their 3rd year of service and the Maxxis' started separating at the beginning of year 4 of service. I figured the cost benefit of either replacing the ST tires during year 3 of use or going with the Michelin 16" LT's. Ends up it's cheaper if you can get 5-6 years of service with the Michelin's.

Trailer tires

From SOS #13: One thing to keep in mind if you decide to run truck tires on your Airstream instead of ST trailer tires, there is less sidewall flex on a truck tire than an ST tire. This translates to more lateral stress on your wheel bearings. If your trailer has Dexter axles with NEVR-LUBE hubs and bearings, you can't inspect these for excessive wear like the regular, non-sealed wheel bearings. It is important to have a qualified service shop measure the bearing "run out" which measures the lateral play that the hub has on the axle stub where the wheel is mounted. I don't have any data on how much is too much run out, but it should be available from Dexter. My shop owner measured the run out on my triple axle trailer and said it was not excessive. A triple axle trailer tends to pivot on the center axle when turning and lateral stress in opposite directions occurs on the front and back axles. This is just something you should be aware of and have checked periodically. The new Goodyear Endurance trailer tire is made in the USA and available in a load range E. Trouble is that they aren't currently available in a 225 75R16 to fit my trailer. Maybe next year.

Tires and general

Once arriving home , we started the update to the digital world and checked function of different systems , etc. Installed new Maxxis tires on the stock 15" wheels. I don't want to get into the great tire debate, but I've run Maxxis on all of my towed vehicles ( campers ,utility and car hauler trailers ) for several years and have never had a failure. Who knows, I may try the 16" truck tires the next time. You're right on about the side loads - you can watch the rubber being scrapped of in tight turns with these triples.

Quality control must have been dismal in this era. I found 4 of the six wheel bearing torqued WAY too tight and damage to the rollers on 2 of the made in China bearings. This was on a rig with less than 4,000 miles since new. Also, 2 of the brake assemblies had never been wired up !

This is actually our second 34" Airstream - first one in late 80's and early 90's . Then went to other brands of motorhomes and trailers, and after having several bad experiences with our last trailer ( the only one purchased new ) we decided to come back to Airstream. They are the best in my book . After having the extra room with slides on our last few trailers and finding out that Airstream had made sliders for a few years, I was on a mission.

Ok, maxxis I ran them for a couple years and you have prior history with them and not a total newbie.

Good start.

Hi,
Somehow I was led to this "Society" and probably qualify as a member. In 2007 I purchased a 2004 Classic 34' with the larger couch S/O, front desk with fireplace, queen. I've been fultiming in it for 7 or 8 years. I've kept it all original so far except for putting 16" silver Eddie Bauer style wheels on it & changing over to the Dometic Blizzard air conditioners. Welcome to the Forums! Wow another 34 S/O...we're really packing them in now. Gary is the keeper of the numbers and he'll do the official honors of awarding the coveted S/OS #.

On the issue of photos, there's a sticky that talks about how to add a photo. It can be found in post #7 in this thread: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f138...ics-44928.html

Noazrk,

Glad you were finally led in the right direction and your rig is S/OS #034

Get it, 34 for a 34! That'll cost ya extra on your semi century dues.

I spotted something missing in you pic, a hot tub. Wow that's a layout.

Safe travels and a fantastic looking rig.

Gary
