We have a water jet cutter that the guys here like to practice on. Home projects are considered training.

I'm nearly certain that this is the original strike plate on my '68 because my trailer has very little wear on it. The hinge is perfect, the door fits, the L-100 is mint and the the strike plate shows no wear. This strike plate has caused no damage or wear to the latch bolt. There are file marks on it from me easing the edge to improve closing.

If it isn't 1968 original, it's an excellent solution.

It is not a casting. It is a stainless steel plate with no pocket, that could easily be made in a few minutes, simply with a piece of 1/8” stainless, a drill, countersink, file and coping saw. Or you could try your luck ordering a 1968 strike plate from whomever and receive... who knows what??

Best of luck, Wm

Thanks for the picture, Terry, but I have doubts that OoDM's part is a good substitute.

The RH edge of the cast part, should the middle of it fit the existing hole, would take up space where the door seal wants to be.

My existing part measures ~1.9 inches between rivet hole centers as shown. What does the part you pictured measure?

Thanks,
Tom

"The striker pocket is "NYLON" which causes zero wear on the striker bolt.

Any and all metal striker pocket replacements "WILL" cause wear on the striker bolt.

That's why Airstream used a brass shim, on the 1970 to 1977 models.
"

Andy makes a good point, maybe make the plate out of brass??

Well, if it was a really good idea, I would have thought Andy would have sold it.

There is this new invention called GREASE that you put on striker bolts to prevent wear.

Great idea!
Then Delrin it is.
Next time I'm by the Delrin store (ALRO), I will get some and make a plate. I want an easy life for the Bargman L-100 lockset.

Delrin Rules!

Thanks for being so helpful, Perry...

The old plate measured 3/16”, but there was room to make the new plate 1/4” thick.
The Delrin is easy to work with with common hand tools. I sawed and drilled and filed the piece in “no time”. The whole project took less than an hour including removal of old plate and installation and adjustment of the new plate ( I made two since I was “set up for manufacturing”).

Door latches firmly and quietly. Better than Stainless Steel plate.

I only have about 30 open and close cycles on the new Delrin strike plate, but I'll go out on a limb and say that this new plate is the “Cat's Pajamas”

Too Cool!!

Thanks again, Wm

PS. Frank was right, cost about 55 cents...

Airstream Inc - please step up to the challenge

Excellent work ALUMINUMINUM! Kudos to you.

perryg114 - I knew you were right all along because you & I have walked/talked enough over lunch for me to see that you are pretty sharp.

My issue is that I want to BUY MY LAST QUALITY REPLACEMENT with no input on my part from someone because I would rather spend my spare time with my two young children instead of doing what I do at the office.

[WHINE ON] Sadly, I am about to spend time making this part that I did not want to because the currently available, store-bought options, are not to my liking [WHINE OFF]

But on a cheerier note, I appreciate all the excellent info everyone shared in this thread, and hope ALUMINUMINUM & Perry in particular will bask in the karma I extended for their contributions.

Don't worry, I have a redundant latch system.

Hallelujah!

After much agitation, I decided the part needed to be non-metal to better cushion the door lock mechanism from from the bumps & grinds of going down the road. As a result, my last three adventures found Kim & me constantly checking the dead bolt to make sure all was well.

Just got email from VTS, "The part is now available."

It was immediately ordered.

I love those emails…
I lock my dead bolt, door handle, and still put a loop of cord between the handle and grab bar just in case.

Several years ago, Airstream sold us the original mold for the nylon striker pocket.

Apparently they did not sell the proper flavor of nylon to use. Some polymers wear better than others.

Apparently not since it was not made in the same mold as the one that just broke.
