Are you keeping the original '55 Safari floor plan with the toilet in the front streetside corner? If so, how are you draining it into the black tank behind the axle? I've never seen a black tank that was not directly below the toilet. I wonder how well solid waste will move thru a pipe from the toilet to the tank, especially if not parked level with the rear of the trailer higher than the front.

Joe,

I don't know about the floorplan in use here but I do know that it is possible to mount a toilet remote from the holding tank. Marine toilet systems do that all the time. The toilet needs to have a built in macerator pump to make it work. Some are a manual pump others are electric. These types of toilets are usually more expensive that typical RV toilets that mount directly above the holding tank but they do offer a remote installation option if that is needed.

No, we are not keeping it original, we decided to keep the beds the same but the rest will change. The '55 Safari did have the toilet in the front, but there where no gray or black tanks, just a small fresh water tank. I attached a picture where the toilet will be setting, right on top of the black tank, and the shower on top the front gray tank.

Looking good, man! On our little one, we're going to have to put an offset pipe to get the toilet plumbed to the black tank. It's only about 8 inches, though with one turn, which I'll run with a wide radius curve... Hope that works! Who puts solids in their toilets after restoring them anyway?

I went with http://www.cabotstain.com/products/product/Clear-Solutions.html for the floor, they only recommend 1 coat, did both sides. This product is in compliance with Federal V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Compounds)

And on the sides of the plywood I'm going to use trempro 635
http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/TremPro_635_p/vts-267.htm
I tried the trempro on a scrap piece and it filled what little voids I had perfectly. It bonds great to the plywood and it will not come off. 53 years from now somebody else will have the joy replacing the floor.....total cost about $50.00 for the cabot and trempro 635

A suggestion - perhaps do not try out that toilet quite yet . You might freak out the neighbors..

I have two buddies with early 50's Flying Clouds to build out so am watching your work closely. It is an absolute weatlh of ideas and information. Thanks for sharing as it all helps....

Did a trail fit on the new axle today, installed new rubber bushings, bolts and shackles, bearings pack and everthing adjusted. Need to order shocks and once installed will brush the leaf spring and give them a good painting.

I have had a few e-mail about my axle and decided to give some details

Axle is a Dexter.....#5200 straight 70" track 53" underslung...$189.00
Drum 12 x 2.....6 bolt.............................................. ............$159.30
Backing plate 12" L.H............................................... ..........$68.99
Backing plate 12" R.H............................................... ..........$68.99
U-Bolt kit............................................... ............................$14.00
Shackle Link...2.5"....5/8 hole.............................................. $9.00
Shackle Bolt....5/8"/ lock nut............................................... $29.34
Bushing............14-73 rednek............................................ ..$89.94
Grease and Pin............................................... ...................$5.00
Parts total............................................. .............................$633.56

Labor............................................. ....................................$75.00

Sale tax............................................... ..............................$38.01

Grand total............................................. ............................$746.57

Labor included: Install backing plate, clean and pack bearings, adj brakes
and weld on shock mounts, installed rubber bushings to leaf springs, plus
they answered all of my questions on wiring, brake away switch and much more.

The shocks where bought at Amazon.com
2 Monroe 555002 Gas-Magnum R.......$18.39........................2 $36.78
(Per Monroe tech support)

The reason for the straight axle is that I'm going with black and gray tanks and need
the 3 extra inches. With a local Dexter axle business was able to take the original axle in for very accurate measurements.

I used a local Dexter axle company:

Completed the axle today and have the frame under the shell. The shell is not completely down, need to trace shell to new plywood since there where no front or rear plywood templates.

I like the chair. A man's gotta admire his hard work from somewhere!

Where's the cooler?

Good job, man! It only gets better from here!

I ordered my tanks and they said that one would have to be back ordered and could take up to 3 weeks. Well, they must of found one in the warehouse and they showed up today, so, the floor is off and the tanks are going in. The rear tank is gray, (kitchen sink only), middle is black and the front is gray, (shower only).

The cooler in is the computer room..........thanks......toastie

VERY nice! I wish I had pressed on with my tank earlier. I am almost through the interior and still, no tank! I'll get it in the right order on the next one.

:-D

Hi toastie,

I'm interested in your plan for evacuating the gray tanks. Will you tie the two together in some way, and if so will you then tie the outlet into the black dump valve as is fairly common in the industry? Or will you evacuate them separately with separate dump valves?

Your work looks great, keep it up!
