After dinking with this
1965 trade wind/money pit for the last 4 years I have finally started to deal with taking up the floor tiles and replacing them with some that are more in line with my wife's color pallet and not made with asbestos. So on the way back from the factory where I got the new air conditioner installed I found some rot by the door up against the side wall to the refrigerator. The refrigerator vent is the probable culprit, but I guess the edge of the door could take some of the blame, although I replaced the seal last year if I remember correctly. The worst part is that I have had that wall out and the refrigerator twice and I didn't see it which makes me think this has occurred while I have been working on it. I replaced the refrigerator vent cover along with all 3 vent stack covers 3 or 4 years ago when I started which gives me a queasy feeling that perhaps the oversize-ed vent cover isn't cutting it. The original one was shorter, but like a lot of the things I've been looking for, nobody makes anymore. So when I get off work I going to take the wall and refrigerator out, pull up the floor, remove everything that looks like it's going to slough, trim my way back to good wood and replace the area with 3/4 marine plywood. I'm just wondering how the floor, and the frame junction go together. Can someone please point me toward a good thread that I should read that kind of goes through this patch (hoping against all hope it will be fairly minimal) before I have to kill myself. And speaking of asbestos, is this a full HAZMAT suit, respirator thing since it's down into the 90s today? Also I read a great solar conversion article, which for the life of me I cant find, that talked about a radiant heater, olympus I think was the brand, that they had mounted on that wall and connected into the refrigerator propane line. While I have the wall off, thought I would multi task.
