Do it right.

If you choose to keep your axles at least replace the shock absorbers.
I didn't really know if these were original or not. I didn't have a reference point for suspension sag either though, so thanks for the tip on the rim lining up with the wheel well.

The other way of measuring is to check the wheel drop when you jack up the trailer. A good axle will drop 3 inches when fully unloaded.

Looking at the trailer again, I've got quite a few inches before the rim lines up with the wheel well. I think I'll do the suspension droop test--I can't risk ordering parts unnecessarily.

If the arm on the axle is horizontal or above you need a new axle. If the arm is below Horizontal, say 22 degrees or so you are fine.

This is while the weight of the trailer is on the axle.

That sounds pretty straightforward, I'll have to try to get a good view of it. Eliminating the urine smell is paramount, so if the axle needs replaced, it'll have to wait a little while.

If the axles are stock, its 99.99% that the axles are shot. The rubber springs will be cracked and broken.

Right choice. If your restoration takes 8 months and you do need axles they should be about the LAST thing you need, so change them out a week before you go camping!

Sadly, keeping the trailer ON the road is what keeps the rubber soft and exercised. Six year old axles could well be shot if the trailer has been yard art.

Buy a lottery ticket now and then and get the winnings to pay for some of the parts, etc.
