Mama wants a Jacuzzi

We're redoing our 74 Tradewind. I choose this forum to post my frame question. The tub will be located in the front of the TT where the gaucho was. The average water volume of the tubs we looked at so far is 70 gallons. at 8.35 lbs this is 584.5 lbs (70 gal x 8.35 lbs). This weight will only be full during bath time. I estimate additional 200 lbs of tub, fittings, & flip up bed to hide the tub. Can the frame hold this kind of weight at the tongue? Please send all comments either for, against, or comedic.

Hot water will be provided by a on demand heater. Wonder what the custom holding tanks will cost? Only kidding, this can only be used at full hookup sites.

Ricky

I would have some serious concerns putting that much weight in one spot in the trailer. You are taking about 800 pounds plus the weight of the occupants of the Jacuzzi all sitting on a frame that is considered undersized by most people.

I fulltime and occasionally just really want a hot soak in a tub. I've seen one vintage unit where the restorer used copper to build a tub that fit under one of the dinettes two seats... small but functional.

Practically speaking the small "tubs" in the rear bath unit's of the 70s were deep shower pans that a small adult or children might use as a tub.

As much as I want a tub from time to time, I wouldn't permanently install one in the Airstream. I've seen a fellow camper use one of those picnic shelters with added opaque sides, and an inflatable pool/spa to get a very nice hot tub. (Boy was the campground owner pissed when he found out about 100 gallons or so of water to fill it.).

That's a curious way to use scarce square footage. But, to each his own.

Did you know that some campgrounds have hot tubs?

Sweet!

Do it!

What could possibly go wrong?

Make sure there's a wall around the hot tub to keep the water from splashing out of the tub while you drive your friends around.

Seriously though - if you know your STEEL frame is in good condition, the additional poundage is chump change weight. ESPECIALLY if you only fill it periodically. To me, it's the equivalent of having a three-hundred pound couple over for dinner. I doubt anyone will tell you that your fat friends will fall through the floor. If you're really worried, just take out other heavy parts of your trailer or place it right above an axle. And remember that you are removing the weight of the gaucho wood and cushions.

I wouldn't go Rock-docking with this set-up though. Enjoy your bubble baths!

I had the urge to put large fiberglass bath tub in - something scratch'n dent for cheap - then cover it with bed setup... I never acted on the impulse, just admitting to thinking of it

Ahhhh - there you go Wabbiteer... admitting to it is the first step!

I can't decide if I'd want to be camping next to Ricky & his bathing beauty or not .... interesting fireside chat?

70 gallons in the graywater tank? Can you say continuous dumping.. I bet you would have the cleanist tank ever!

That would be crazy.

As for the weight. I don't see why it would not be ok as long a you did not tow it full of water. LOL

I think it would be more pratical to do the same as in the picture below. this way you do not have to change your stream. Much cheaper too!

The water looks really dirty. Or am I looking at it wrong? Must be a real trick getting in and out of it. And why would you wear a shower cap in a tub? You might have to haul the fire wood in the TV, it would make a real mess in the trailer.

The 70 gallon Jacuzzi in my house is for two people; are you sure this is a "mama wants", or a "me and mama wants".
More seriously, I don't think a on demand water heater will work. It will take most of an hour to fill the tub and by then it will have cooled off quite a bit.
You could put in a recirculating heater but you will need a lot of amps to run the pump and reheater and on demand heater all at once.

I can't imagine the frame would be very happy with you...

Thanks for all the input so far. I used 70 gal. as an max amount based on standard 5' tubs at the big box stores. I'll use a smaller 1 person tub if a decent one can be had. Mama originally wanted just a tub. But if I'm to go throught all that trouble, what's a few more dollars & jets on the inside.

At the Moraine View Rlly a couple of years ago, there was an A?S there that had a hot tub in it. I don't remember who; but look up the rally and ask Jack Canavera.

Are we sure this is not related to the April 1 post about the wood-fired stove in an Airstream?

I'm down wid dat if it is.

I'm looking at the drop in style. This should fit through the door opening. Of course i'll measure twice & cut once.

Starting with the same design objective, we're having a Japanese soaking tub (TP-21) installed in our 1987 34' Excella refurb. Less water, same effect. Gotta be able to fold yourself up though...
