Fender Well (Squares)?

When I was disassembling my Bambi I found small metal sheets of Galvanized metal in the corners. See Photos. Has anyone else found these? And what purpose did they serve? They seem to me that they would cause water and mud to collect on them and cause corrosion.

I did not have those squares on my 58 when I took it apart - I really cannot see any purpose for them......

I wonder if they were concerned about rubbing on the welds?

Wheel Well Squares

On my 74 Tradewind, I had one of those on the right rear but it was on the top. When I removed it I noticed a sliver of a gap in the floor. It looks like there is a corresponding piece on the bottom. I think it was to close this thin gap. It might of been close to 5:00 on Friday when the jig saw that cut the floor around this area was turned off in 1973. I think its an aluminum bandaid in my case.

Bandaid may be right

I have put the fenders and floor back on my frame. I didn't use the squares. I think I got a good fit.
Thanks for the reply
