belly pan aluminum 71 International Sovereign 31'
will 2024-0 clad 3032 aluminum work for belly pans. located some that is 48" X 144" locally at 50.00 a sheet. Is this good or bad. Made a error on first post would not let me change reposted question.
2024-0 is going to be very workable because it is VERY low tensile strength. The workabilty will be offset by by the resistance to denting. To show you how soft it is - 2024 T3 is 45 KSI yield and 2024-0 is only 11 KSI. The price seems right ($50) so I would go ahead and get it. Work slowly and keep it supported so it doesn't kink or dent. Good luck.
I would not advise using the soft alclad. It is going to dent up in a major way and look horrible in a very short time. I personally would not use alclad at all for the belly. Use 5052. It is much more economical, will match your clear coat better, and if you ever do polish, it will match the alclad almost perfectly then too. Most use .025 thickness, but I prefer to use .032.
I never heard of 2024 cladding on 3032. Usually it is 2024-XX with pure aluminum cladding for corrosion resistance. 6061-T6 is easy to find and has good corrosion resistance. The stuff that comes on Airstreams is too thin and too easy to corrode. 5052-H32 will work but I would go with .032 since it is pretty soft. A little thickness will make it alot stronger and less likely to dent. Paint your frame to reduce corrosion. I don't like riveting the belly skin on because it is a pain to get back off when you want to inspect the frame and floor. I used stainless screws tapped into the frame. An insulating washer under a zinc washer is a good idea.
