Bath floor questions

HI everyone,
So I have the whole bath floor out of my 69 Overlander and I have found that between the "C" channel and the outer skin there is a piece of steel angle iron just about dead center below the rear compartment door. it has a little rust, but is not a total loss. I also found that a previous owner either replaced or repaired the rear bumper storage compartment with what appears to be an old street sign. My questions are: 1, is the steel angle iron supposed to be there for support or was what was there originally replaced with this piece? then if it is not original, how do I go about getting it out and replacing it with what should be there, and what should be there? 2, the rear bumper compartment was just about three quarters across the rear bumper as I found it, was the original compartment the full width of the bumper area? If you have blogs or can link me to some pages I would be grateful, but I always like hearing what you have to say! Thanks in advance for your time!
