79-31' land yacht wet floor

we just bought this Airstream from Indiana, so we are renovating it, we took out the rear twin beds and the floor at the rear left and right was wet(not rotten), can this be to due to a seal on the outside fender/bumper it looks like it has deteriorated, from the run off of rain, and would a silcone weather seal, do the job. Also what do the 4 digit number at the fron t and rear of the outside of the trailer mean.
thx

The big red numbers are / were the PO's WBCCI number. You can find alot of information about the WBCCI by searching on it on this forum.

Silicone it poo poo. Vulkem is what you want for sealing. www.airstreamdreams.com Near as I cant tell you think the leak is where the frame exits the belly. Not likely to make it up to the floor but if the seal is bad I defiantly would dress it.

I would look up. My bet is you have a Vent somewhere above that is leaking and its running down behind the end cap and to either side of the window and down the the floor. My bet is the vent for the tanks is on the bulkhead. They are very prone to leaking when old.

www.inlandRV.com has the seal kit for that.

Also the the seams sometimes will start leaking as well. There is a liquid sealers for that. Some are available from the above links or www.airstream.com has Acryl-R Seam sealer that they now recommend.

twoguys,
Welcome to the forums! With that vintage of trailer anything is a possible leak source, plumbing vents, roof vents, windows, window frames, clearance lights, tail lights, storage compartment doors, missing rivets and seams. These are all maintenance items that require perodic inspection and correction. Use the search function up above on the blue bar and enter your choice of search terms...clearance light leak, or window leak, etc and you will be rewarded with hours of reading and others pain and solutions

First thing to do with an old 31 footer is to check that the frame has not bent or started to fail. No sense putting alot of money into a unit with limited life expectancy. Get in touch with a local dealer or knowledgeable club member who can check it out for you. If it has not been reinforced, see what it would cost to put the factory fix on it. It depends on how much you intend to use the unit on the road and what life you want out of it. If it already has "elephant ears" that is a good start. Look for the leak with a hose and a bunch of time and a friend. Once you find the leak fix it. It might be good to go over anything on the top that looks the least marginal as you do not want to go thru this again any time soon. A unit that is 26 years old and may not have had the necessary preventive care can have alot of problems.

Not so bad

Wow, that last thread is somewhat dismal. (don't cash in the unit yet )

Actually, you symptom is typical of that coach. ( I had the same coach with the exact same problem. I had to replace the rear bedroom floor.

When shopping for older airstreams, this is the first place I look for water damge. The entrance door is almost a given seeing that the door is not the best seal after a few years of use.
The rear window can leak through the sill and even more common, where the exterior skin meets the bumper will seperate and water will seep under the shell and wick into the wooden floor.

if the damage is not too far gone, you can dry the area well and treat with a wood treatment agent that will harden the deteriorating wood. The make certain that you seal the bumper and the exterior skin.

Obviously this is all for not if you have a lot of vibration from unbalanced road gear and even worse, the dreaded "rear end seperation" You can read plenty about that on this forum starting witha thread called "Droopy rear end" or "rear end sag"

Dont get too scared yet, it all comes with vintage ownership.
