Born to Run ‘76 Ambassador Overhaul
We have purchased a 1976 AS Ambassador 29’ with rear bath and twin beds. Everything looked to be fairly original with 2 POs. Our idea was to keep a lot of what we could, but I needed to draw the line at the 45 yr old carpeting, mattresses, couch, and curtains. The amount of dust and other things in those I don’t want to even think about. (Let me know if you want them!)
It has been about a month. We can only work on it on the weekends because it is stored somewhere else so we are a little limited in how much we can work on her (her name is Born to Run. Can’t go wrong with The Boss!)
The idea was to keep the cabinets, walls, etc. However, as we took things out, things fell apart or we realized that they weren’t in very good shape. Plastic and appliances etc. don’t hold up too well after 45 years.
We want to paint the walls and make it brighter, so we have ended up pretty much gutting it in order to get at things. So now my idea is to maybe keep some of the upper cabinets and try to do an updated 1970s aesthetic. I have a piece of that flowered bathroom wallpaper that I will integrate somewhere!
Where are we today? All structures are out. Furnace, AC, water pump, tanks, and walls (except bathroom) are still in. A friend just came over who is an engineer, and recommended we take out all the wall panels and take a look at the electric. That is a whole lot more work then I anticipated. Plus neither my husband nor I know anything much about electric. Do others recommend we do that?
We also want to replace the black tank and at least check the gray and freshwater tank and clean them. Our water pipes also burst because the previous owners neglected to winterize. So we need to redo the plumbing.
