There's a partial sales brochure on the Airstream, Inc web site. It only shows the empty weights.

29' Ambassador Twin: hitch 540 lbs, total 4825 lbs
Double: hitch 510, total 4820

Somewhere on that site is a document with both empty and gross weights but I don't have it handy.

You have to add about 400 lbs for water, plus all your gear, so you could add 800-1000 lbs easy.

can anyone tell me if a GMC 1500 Sierra with a tow package is capable of towing a 29ft. 1972 Airstream Ambassador with a dry weight of 4820 and tongue weight of 510? i can't seem to find what the GVWR for the airstream of that year either......but my GMC max is 7000....
the GVWR is not listed on the airforums chart for that year trailer.....perhaps not known.....would anyone know how i can figure this out?
thank you !!

Sorry to say but I definitely would not tow that airstream with that truck. I have the exact same airstream as you do, except it's a 1971. I am positive they are nearly the same weight, which is 7100 pounds. Then you have to account for extra weight like water, personal belongings, etc. I would add atleast another 5-800 pounds to be safe. So ideally, you want a truck that can tow an upwards of 8k-10k pounds. That's not to say that your truck can't pull it, I'm sure it technically can, but that will create a dangerous situation. It took me a little research and digging to find a vehicle that could tow mine and we ended up with a z71 Avalanche. Also make sure you are calculating the GVWR correctly. It's a pain in the ass. Good luck. Also, inside the door to my airstream is a metal plaque with the weight on it, that's where I got the 7100 pounds. Check in there but I'm sure it's the same weight as mine. Could always have it taken to a weigh station as well.

GVW for the trailer is 7100 pounds, the same as a Sovereign of the same year. The Ambassador is basically a Sovereign with 2 feet cut off the front.

I'm not sure where others are coming up with the are getting 7000 lbs dry weight. I own a 76' ambassador and it is definitely not. That number is likely the maximum amount the trailer can weight when loaded.

The dry weight is is in the low 4000 lbs.

Here is a link to a sheet that contains the dry weight and tongue weight for each year and model.

I know strange question... but I’m not with my trailer right now and I’m looking to get the total length of my 1970 ambassador. Is it 29’ for the body only, hitch is more? Or is it 29’ total including hitch? I googled for this info but couldn’t find it. Thanks in advance!

Albert,

Length: Should be ball to bumper if no modifications to either have been made.

However: Owners frequently report a variety of lengths (inches off) that does not quite correspond to their model numbers.Click image for larger version
