Would you consider buying an Airstream with hail damage?
Would you consider buying an Airstream with hail damage?
Reason I ask is Im considering buying 1 or 2 for resale. I can buy them from the insurance company who has totalled them because of hail dents.
When an insurance company "totals" a vehicle, it is a financial decision, not a safety decision.
So, assuming everything else on the trailer is in great working order, would you buy say a $75,000 Airstream (value before hail damage) for $40k?

As they say "that depends". There's damage that just makes things look ugly. There's damage that creates (or might create) leaks. There's damage that interferes with the function of systems (like ducted AC) or might do so. Almost any exterior damage will impact the insulation. That will mess with AC and heat in extreme temperatures. Thats a lot of unknowns and a lot of variables ....

I bought my 2012 25fb from copart a year or so ago. It has light hail damage and was really clean and have been really happy with it.Remember they are salvage title so the title has to be converted to rebuilt. Also banks probably won't loan a lot on rebuilt title. I got mine at a good deal but 90% of airstreams on copart and iaai bring way to much in my opinion you just got to get lucky to get a good deal. I'm in the 18 wheeler salvage business and I buy lots of trucks from copart and iaai.They always sell the campers right after the trucks so I always watch them sell. There was an 06 25ft RB with light hail damage that sold today on copart and after fees was pushing 20K. They just really seem to be going through the roof in price here lately.

Is it insurable? Most insurance will not cover a trailer with a salvage title or extensive preexisting damage.

ALFA insurance here in Alabama. They insured a few rebuilt vehicles for me all with full coverage. They also insure my house. There a great company and have always payed any claim I've ever had within a few days with no run around.

We looked at two when purchasing ours-- ended up walking away from the rebuilt title one. Another member on here told me, "You can fix anything on an Airstream--except the title.
My biggest concern was that I couldn't know for sure that all it was was hail damage. The unknowns weren't worth the small savings of buying a trailer with title issues. But there's a perfect (enough) unit for everyone, if you feel good about it, go for it and don't look back. Better than wondering about it years from now.

I went and looked at mine in person at the salvage pool before purchase. I also bought it directly from the auction not through a middle man that will mark it way up. I saved about 20K over a comparable perfect used one. I don't like the small hail dings but for the price I can live with it. I've pulled it probably 5,000 miles since I've owed it and can't complain. Damage was mostly the front of roof and few dings on the side. Here is a pic of mine but dings are hard to see in pics.

It depends upon the purpose. IF it were for a construction-site office...SURE! But you can probably buy a BRAND NEW SOB for less...and get full depreciation...so the question is...WHY would you do that?
If it were for my personal use... Unless I were willing to live with the ugliness or fix it myself...NO.

I probably would assuming the damage does not look like it hurt the integrity of the outer shell.

I would say no... but some of the places I want to go have hail storms often...
so... HAIL YES... but it would have to be cheap!

Before I'd buy a newer Airstream with hail damage I'd buy a used one in near perfect condition for even less. There are a lot of used Airstreams out there in great condition. I couldn't stand something as nice as an Airstream all pock marked up. If the only way you can own a newer Airstream is to buy one so damaged it needs a salvage title, I'd be looking at something else.

Dinged airstreams need love too. I would not buy one that looks like it had a sledge hammer took to it. The little dings on the right side of mine almost blend in with the rivet indentations. It would cost way to much to fix. Upside is you don't have to worry bout what off the beaten path you take it cause the worry of scuffing it up is gone lol.

I looked at some hail damaged Airstreams before I bought my first one and have also looked at cars with salvage titles. In every case my insurer told me in Texas you can only get liability insurance with a salvage title. Your state may be different.
You can buy an old Airstream with raccoons living in it, restore it and insure it for $50K and buy a fairly new one with hail damage and a salvage title, restore it, and it is still considered scrap metal.

Alabama must be different. I have full coverage. But it doesn't cover the hail damage that's already there but will cover hail damage to the other panels that are not damaged or any other damage. My truck insurance covers the collision.

No, I wouldn't buy an Airstream with hail damage. I'm a type A sorta fella and could never get over the fact that my AS has lots of little dents.
