PayPal: Pros & Cons

We are looking for forum members input on having a PayPal account.

The purpose would be to facilitate the transfer of funds for a purchase and then after that we could use it for online purchases.

We have read some online reviews and instructions. Some of the negative reviews are outdated and may pertain to how things used to operate.

Our other option is a cashier's check but the seller is quite comfortable with PayPal.

What are your experiences.

I have never used Paypal for a big purchase. But I use it all the time for internet shopping. Outdoors Mart takes it, for example. So far very happy with it. Have never actually read anything about it.

Nothing but positive experiences buying and selling throught it. I only had to file a claim against a seller once for not shipping the item and Paypal quickly straightened it out and I received my item.

I use PayPal very regularly (and internationally) and have bought several vehicles using it, including Peanut our Argosy MH. Any issue I have had, has been very quickly resolved.

Only drawback I see is, when buying something big, the money is in the sellers hands before collection. No issue if you have inspected before hand but is a 'leap of faith' if buying vehicles unseen. Even then PayPal will protect you if the vehicle is not per the description at time of purchase.

I have had a PayPal account for 6 years and use it frequently for everyday purchases, and for vacation reservations from private home owners. They have an option where the seller isn't paid until you receive the merchandise, and the money isn't drawn from your account until then. I have no hesitation with the service.

What are you purchasing through it? Not an Airstream, are you? Purchase protection is not covered on vehicles.

I have had nothing but good experience with PayPal.

Another option I like to use for online purchases is linked to my Citi MasterCard. I use the Virtual Account Number feature to generate a one-time-use credit card number that can be used as you are paying for an online purchase. It is linked to your main number, but you don't have to give out your actual card number, just the "virtual" one. Also, you can put dollar and/or time limits on each virtual account number that you generate.

That's the ONLY reason I keep my Citi card.

Thought I'd pass that on....

Several yeas ago I was part of a law suit against PayPal. We won. Details are sealed, so do not ask. That said I do use them for SMALL internet buying if there is no other option. Be very careful and make sure transation and links are legitimate. Many scams are centered and aimed at gullible people pretending to use PayPal for payment.

Sounds like positive experiences so far. Thanks all.

There might be an Airstream purchase related to this line of question. 😚

The Citi card virtual number sounds interesting. Wonder if we have that on our Citi Visa. Might have to check that out.

My new bank cc charged 3% to pay a Paypal invoice in Canadian dollars for a China ebay purchase, my old Discover didn't, both used favorable exchange rates so it was still a good deal. Paypal has been a great way to shop online, pay for and sell to individuals, online stores and auctions for the past 8 yrs. Open a new bank account put minimum amount on deposit to use it to pay Paypal or get a CC that has secure worry free policy for shopping on line.

Have used Paypal in the buying and selling of two Airstreams. But only for transfer of deposit (5-10%) to hold trailer for final purchase/sale. Then use bank to bank transfer of funds for completing the sale once everyone is happy.

Paypal has worked well for selling other items though, like wheels, bike racks, etc.

I would never use paypal for any amount I was not prepared to lose.

I have bought and sold trailers using personal checks but only after other factors convinced me I was taking a low risk.

A wire is the best way to ensure the funds are paid and received.

I have used Paypal for over 10 years now with only one issue years ago when I bought and paid for an item from an eBay user who promptly closed his account after receiving my money. EBay and Paypal could do nothing about it since he was no longer a user. However the item was only $40 so do not think this guy was a big time scammer.

I use PayPal regularly for purchases and occasionally for selling, and have never had an issue.

Opened the PayPalaccount for deposit amount only. Reminder will be a bank wire transfer with balance in cashiers check upon pick up.

Did not feel good putting all my personal information in there. I know most all people use it with good experiences.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Paypal showing up everywhere

Have used paypal for over 500 transactions, typically $500 or less. Paypal is showing up at a lot of commercial places like (I think) walmart, Krogers, etc. Check out fees but they are a good place to transfer or receive money

Nothing but good results with PayPal, both buying on the internet, and accepting payments through PayPal for our Guesthouse vacation rental.

Big +1 on PayPal. I couldn't run my little ecommerce business without it ( www.audettecollection.com ). Never a problem since 1999. It's especially convenient for international transactions with fair exchange rates.

And most folks don't mind using the family and friends option once you're trusted, which eliminates the fee paid by the seller.

Cheers,
John
